Parrots
None yet, adopting a B&G
Hello all!
I am new to the forum, I wanted to post on here to welcome myself lol! And my (fingers crossed) new Macaw. A little history on myself I work with birds of prey, as a volunteer at a local rehabilitation center. I go out and rescue injured birds and bring them in for rehab, I assist in medical procedures administering meds and occasionally in educational programs (although that was pre-pandemic). Long story short I have always had a propensity for Parrots, and specifically Macaws. Since I was a child. My mother would let us have reptiles, hamsters, dogs cats whatever we like, just no birds! So now that I am a grown man, out of the military and on my own I have decided to start looking at and pricing parrots out. Well in doing do I went to a local Parrot shop, they had babies and rescue birds and everything inbetween. Off in the corner there was a glorious juvenille blue and gold, he was being very quiet and minding his own business. Out of curiosity I walked up to him and said hi, he bent down in his cage and I scratched his head and we had a conversation and as I walked away he said "come back" the owner of the bird shop was astounded. He told me no one had been able to approach him and he was biting and screaming and he was shocked how he took to me right away. So the owner got him out put him on a perch and we bonded. So tomorrow I am going back to put a deposit on him, and play with him. The store is going to train me over the course of 5 to 10 visits on handling him and care. I cant wait!!!! I just am so excited and I know I will be using ya'll for a resource!!! THanks for reading and any input you can offer in advance!!!! He did bite me pretty hard but im used to it with the Raptors.

Welcome! Will be great to have you

Welcome! And congratulations on having been chosen by a bird. Can’t wait to hear more. Will the store let you take pictures? We love pictures.

Hi - I just posted this to another new Macaw owner, so excuse the names. Advice? Read, read read as mach as you can.

"Hi and welcome! Thank you for attempting this, not many folks would. P**** W***** is , maybe, a start, not really held in high regard here. All and every post by birdman666 is !
Also high beneficial is the "I Love Amazons" thread at the top of the Amazons subform here, it contains GOLD on the general care, feeding, and upkeep of parrots, not just Amazons. Really recommend you go thru that too. And as my good friend Inger said, sitting close by Lacey and reading aloud in a soft soothing voice is going to help her become a member of your flock ( family). THe stickies at the top of the Macaw forum are also chock full of good info.
Like the stickie "Beak-o-phobes Guide" there.

ParrotForms is one of the most valuable resources anywhere, not just online. I think you are making progress, believe it or not. Parrots rate of accepting change is GLACIAL compared to our monkey brain adaptability, so really , proceed at Lacey's rate.

We have a saying here - It's never the fault of the parrot; It is always the fault of the human. Once you change your mind set to look at things from the parrots point of view, it becomes easier to understand what is going on.

Stick around - we'll see you through the ride!!"

I just got home from my nightly visit! Tonight went great! He only bluffed at me, no real bites and ny the end of our visit he was stepping up on cue!!! I will get pics tomorrow! Thank you all so much!

Hey wrench 13 I actually read and followed those on the other post! Lol

I cant believe how happy Rico makes me. He's amazing.

Ok I just left Rico we made huge strides again today. The workers and owner of the rescue are astounded by how quickly he has taken to me. I guess only Paul the owner of the shop is able to move Rico but today I got him out of his cage off his perch back to his cage! So exciting! February 5th i get to bring him home! In the meantime thousands on toys cages perches and bird proofing!....im not tech savvy in the slightest and I cannot figure out how to attach a pic!

I guess maybe this worked? Do you see a pic?
