HELP! Need to know if this is an infection on my baby conure.

My 25 day old crimson bellied conure even tho he is active, seems to have a red bump on his back. I’m not sure if this is normal but i just noticed it just now. Additionally, he has been pooping weirdly (see youtube video) —>

Should i bring him to the vet?

I just checked if there was any puss coming out of the bump and there was a little. Any idea what’s wrong? He seems active and healthy other than that.

ANy sort of puss indicates there is an infection, and should be seen by an Certified Avian Vet, or taken back to your breeder. Selling un-weaned babies is a horrible practice, and many die because the new owners have no clue on how to feed and wean the baby properly. DO not wait on this - you only have a short window when parrots exhibit outward signs of illness. By the time they show signs they are already very sick.

thanks all, i went to the vet and they said that he will be fine and that lump is actually just the preen gland. As for the weird pooping style, they said it could be smth wrong with the digestion and gave some meds for it. Overall, he will be fine.

Perhaps it’s just the photo, but it does seem like your bird’s preen gland is very pronounced.

i found out that it wasn’t pus but just oil from the gland 😅

yeah they were avian specialists and all certified. could the gland be more pronounced due to it being a baby? cause that’s what the vet said.

It’s totally possible! Could also just be the angle of the photo and the fact that the flash of the camera hit the skin in a funny way. It doesn’t look as swollen in the video.

I have just had some really subpar advice from dog/cat vets because they were operating outside of their area of experience so I like to double check that the vet you’re seeing is someone experienced with birds!

I hope your little buddy feels better soon and we’d love to see more photos of them!

The preen gland does look large in a bald bird. I had a plucker years ago and you could see the gland easily. I can’t imagine that it could be impacted or infected in such a young baby.

I think pooping is something baby birds may get some help withfrom their parents. So maybe he has to work to get his poops out by himself.

Im glad he’s ok and I will be excited to see what he looks like with feathers!
