Male senegal parrot
So since yesterday after an attempted flight oscars been acting unusual. He stays on one side his cage on his perch. No dripping from mouth/nose. His feathers aren't ruffled. He eats/drinks once in awhile. He got on my husbands shoulder(likes him more) last night. I gave him a peanut (a fav) and he just sits there holding it with his foot. He bites at it a lil bit at a time. He hasn't come out like he usually does when his doors open. He's not noisy but hasn't made a sound since yesterday. Just not himself. I just got him.

how long have to had his. if its only been a few days to a a few weeks. its probably just relocation stress. give him a while to get used to things.

also, i saw you had another thread on this same thing. only make one thread about something. it just litters up the forums. :D

Sorry about the double post. He was fine before. Seems less active now.

When in doubt, call the vet. Often they can tell you what to look for specifically better than we can. The biggest worry would be internal injuries. Often the phone call will give you peace of mind.
He may just be still scared and shaken up.
Good Luck

He's been here a week. A lot of vets don't give out free advice. It's all about the money these days.

A good vet will, they will tell you what to look for. They want you as a long term client.
But if your bird is not drinking or eating much, appears to be in pain at all you should take him in. I know it's really hard to tell, there lays the problem with birds.

I'd hold him if he'd let me. Just to look at him. He's still adjusting to being here. He still eats but not as much. Calling my vet that sees birds. He's seen other pets of mine.

Ok he's going at 6 tonight. This vet is great. Nice, explains everything well. He's seen lots of birds.

Thats good, better safe than sorry. And it's always good to get an exam and a relationship established with your vet when you get a new bird.

Good Luck

I know and they couldn't tell me anything over the phone as I expected.

Funny thing.. My husband comes home opens his door and he comes out. My own bird doesn't like me. He's sitting on his arm now.

Often the case that a particular parrot will like only one particular person mainly. If you work with him properly, he might come around to liking you as much.

Otherwise it may be time for you to get another parrot who loves you more than or as much as your hubby. :)

I personally think you should work with him all you can while he is already clipped and when the feathers grow in not clip anymore but instead make the environment real safe for him in the future.

I feel parrots are generally healthier and happier fully flighted. I know my flock of Senegals are happiest flighted as I brought some of them into my home already clipped and now since they can do what Nature intended them to do, it sure shows and makes a difference in their lives = they have a zest for life now, much more so than when clipped to any degree.

I doubt another bird is in the cards for us. I think they really bonded yesterday when oscar sat on his arm. His previous owner was also a male. I like just watchin him too. I talk to him a good bit. Not sure i want a fully flighted bird. I might be good for him but not tv's and furniture(pooping everywhere). How often are thier wings usually needed clipped!

Parrots should be supervised when out of their cages, not allowed to fly all over the house "bombing" everything (etc.). :)

Will let a clipper answer your questions on how often, as in my opinion the answer is almost never.

Not sure where you live, as I write this, but if in a single family home on your own property you might (if possible) consider putting a window flight/aviary/cage on the outside of a window with southern exposure and allow your bird to be out there when you are not interacting with him/her. That way he can stay fully flighted, get good flight exercise and not "bomb" your furniture or chew up things in your home or get in trouble in your home.

Of course you bring him/her in during freezing weather or storms if need be or build the flight with adequate protection from the elements etc.

We rent as of right now and we're in the city. Hoping to move soon. Being fully flighted is something we'll think about. Thanks for all the input.
