Shades: African Grey Congo Male, hatched June 20, 2016
Hi everyone,

In about 90 minutes, Shades has his vet appointment. What's the best way to get him into his small cage without his hating me afterwards? The last time I put him in it, I had to force him, and he was NOT happy.

Feeling anxious! :(

Does he have a favorite treat he REALLY loves that he doesn't get often? You can try putting some inside the carrier then setting him down in front of the open door and seeing if he would be willing to enter for the treat.

EDIT: BTW, I feel your anxiety. I ended up having to force Lucille into a carrier yesterday and she has most definitely not forgiven me for this! ;)

Does Shades step up ok? You could try a 'step up' into the carrier and leave a treat waiting inside (a time consuming treat that requires some attention)?

I've got to get Bella into a carrier for the vets tomorrow...

If you work out a good technique - Let me know :D

I'm still figuring out what he likes. He has taken to a koosh ball, which is a shredded rubber ball, but I'm sure that isn't good for him. I did notice he spits out what he bites off, but I still won't give it to him to play with. I could just coax him into the cage with it, then take it away once he's in and the door is closed. These birds are so darned smart, though. He may be onto me before I even get him near the cage. Ha ha!

Oh no, poor Lucille, and you too. I hope she manages to forget and fogive soon. I'm sure its tugging at your heart.

He steps up when he wants to get out of his big cage, and when he is on the floor. He will NOT step up when he is on top of the small cage, which is being used as a perch until we pick up his tree stand tonight. Whenever I ask hit o step up from the small cage, he's figured out it means he's going back into his big cage. Instead of stepping up, he just put his head down so we can give him head scratches It's so darned cute, we all get such a big kick out of it! He is quite the manipulator.

get him in there and don't worry about it.

The trip to the vet is needed, and there will be more, these birds are very resilient. They manage to survive and still attach to their person.

Any time I had to take Smokes to her doctor I HAD to towel her :( She would growl at me,chew at the towel..but as soon as I put her inside, she'd let out a very loud and affirmative WOO! Like "ok,I'm in here now"

And all the way to the vet, she'd whistle and mumble and talk away, like it was no big deal

Don't let Shades push you around! :p

That's exactly what I did. I tried to trick him, but he didn't fall for it. I got him to step up partially, then I had him step his other leg on my other hand. It wasn't that bad. Thank you for your encouraging words.

I learned how to towel today from the vet. He had a good visit, and had a clean bill of health.

Hmm, is it really that obvious that he pushes me around. :D

[So now that thats over, practice getting him in, while you have time to experiment on the best , least traumatic way to do it. Suggestion: have him step up onto your hand, give him a treat that will last a few minutes ( chicken bone or simlar) and back him into the carrier. You might even make doing it a part of nightly trick training, to really desensitize him to it.

I really like that idea. we certainly have no shortages of chicken bones around here. Please keep those great suggestions coming. :-)

Travel carriers only usually appear very close to the time they are required, so they are 'alien' to our birds as they have not got used to seeing it, being in it etc. If it is left out for a few days before it helps and if they want to go explore, climb in and out all the better with a little treat to retrieve of course.

I have a travel cage that is 18"x24", I leave it out in the main room everyday and use it as Perjo's toilet so to speak. First place I take her when I take her off the cage is to the travel cage, first thing she does is poop there. But the fact she sees it and uses it everyday helps when I put her in it. I put her in it for going outside for our baths. She never gives me a problem going inside b/c she knows is means we're going to bathe or we're going outside and maybe even in the car for a ride.
