I rescued Poncho on May 24, 2012. He has some bad habits like screaming and he will not step up yet, but today was the first day he let me scratch his head. I was told he was two in April of this year. Can anyone tell me what type of Amazon they think he is? I have not found pictures yet were the edge of the bird’s wings are red like ponchos.
Thanks,

Also, once he settles a bit more you should have his beak groomed, nails trimmed. Good luck he is a beauty.

Not only does he need a much bigger cage but he needs to get out of that round cage and into a dometop or rectangle cage that is at least 36"x28".

Also the "stick" he is sitting on must be changed to "natual wood". Congrat to a wonderful att beatutiful Zon. When he has bonded and get used to all new thinks he will be a freind for life

Hey an welcome to the forum. I would need to see a few more pics, but i vote Panama.

Handsome guy you have there. Learn all you can about his needs so he will continue to thrive under your care. I agree with everyone on the cage type and the need for more natural perches. The dowel type perches that come with cages are just no good. They are too smooth. You can gather newly cut or fallen branches from safe wood trees, clean them and use them as perches. Also the rope perches are comfortable for their feet. Proper care and exercise of a birds feet is important.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Yes Poncho needs a lot of new things and he will get all of them. I have had him a week today and did not want to moves things too fast. As stated in my post Poncho was rescued. The woman was very much afraid of him and would push him to the back of the cage with a broom handle so that she could feed him. Most of his life was spent in a basement where he was feed just once a week. He has a terrible scream which sounds like a smoke detector going off, but I can work with that. He has been on a seed diet only, his entire life. I have introduced pellets into his seed and hopefully he will accept them. I have also been given him many fruits and vegetables, which he loves very much. You cannot imagine how good I felt when last night, after 6 days in my home, he fluffed up pushed his head to the cage and allowed me to scratch his head. Thanks again everyone for your kind words and suggestions for improving Ponchos life.

It sounds like Poncho has found a very good home with you :) With time and patience, he will come round!

Good luck with him and keep us posted on his progress:)

Good job !!!!!! with the fruits try to add citrus orange and lemons ,tangerine they have an amazing effect on their feathers and you get to eat the most of the fruit one or two slices is all they want. Putting pellets in with the seeds some times doesn't because they just eat around what they don't reconize as food so try giving him his seed in the morning for ten minutes then give him the pellets in his bowl for the day while your gone, I also try giving pellets dunked in Oj or apple juice as individual treats if he will accept food from your hand.
