I have a alexandrine parakeet who I've had since I was about 10 so 16 years and I've just noticed today his beak seems to be looking weak every year his beak chips and kinda renews like our nails but I've just noticed that it's now breaking slightly for example usually the bottom and top join but now there is a gap at the side. He's fine in himself still eating and playin etc just wondering what I can give him to make his beak stronger etc. Any fruits? Vitamins any suggestions for a good source of calcium? ... I do put a cuttleshell in but he's not interested in them.... He's not a caged bird I have a room as a big avairy with his budgie friend so he has access to rope stone and wood pearches

If you can post a pic that would give more of an idea if there is a problem.

He is by no means an old bird. I am looking after 3 alex's at the moment & their beaks are as you have decribed. Very flakey, i am confident that these 3 are because of to much sunflower in their diet. While they are with me i have changed their diet.

Parrots don't usually eat calcium unless they are laying. If his diet is fine & he has access to natural sunlight, I would say he is chewing on something hard that is causing it. Because the beak is growing all the time it will grow out.

But in any case if your at all worried your Vet should be able to do some tests to see if there is some health problem.
