Me and my wife recently bought a moluccan cockatoo. He is friendly and let's us pet him but when we put him on the floor hes fine one minute and the next trying to bite are feet or whatever else he can get. What can I do to help stop this before it escalates.

Hello Brandon.. welcome to the forum.. I'm also Brandon..:)

Is he nipping at your toes, or is he going ballistic and trying to hurt you?

I ask because my birds are usually more docile when they're on the ground...:)

Your cockatoo is teaching you to dance! That's what most people do, when their cockatoo bites their feet... The birds find it hilarious... If you try to ignore it, they'll bite harder just to get you to dance...

Best to leave your bird off the floor...

He tries to attack he runs and trys to bite me or if I'm holding a towel or blanket he tries to attack me only when I'm hold it

But he let's me pet him its kinda out of the blue when he does it

In general I would suggest you dont allow him to simply wander the floor. Its a pretty dangerous place for him. He could be stepped on, he could chew things that might make him sick/injured, or find his way into something like the couch. That said, I know how hard it is to keep them up, I keep play stands and rope ladders all over the place to try to keep my Mango off the floor but he still likes to head down there. I would just keep picking your bird up and putting him where he belongs. They are pretty determined so you might need to distract him with something. Its not uncommon for them to be nervous of towels. Birds are often "toweled" to make handling easier for things they dont cooperate with. This is common at the vets, for nail trimming, wing trimming etc. Your bird might just associate the towel with being restrained. Ive worked on it with Mango by rubbing him with my towel to help dry him off after a shower. I also leave his towel close to his cage and let him see it/ be around it quite a bit.

Thank you for all of your help any ideas on how to get him used to us handling him and putting him in his cage ?

If he is nippy try using a T stand. There are loads of threads on here about different training methods, someone with more cockatoo experience would be better able to tell you what works best. If he is new, he will take time to get use to you. I would suggest lots of time spent talking to him and hand feeding his favorite foods. Bonding takes time, be patient and dont give up!
