2 Peach-faced lovebirds (1 SeaGreen)
My name is Kara, and I am currently fidless. A friend of mine offered to sell me a baby lovebird just before Christmas, but despite falling madly in love with her photo, I wasn't prepared and had to refuse.

I'd never considered a lovie before.

My big confession: I've never actually owned a bird. My sister is a bird nut, and has had birds for our whole lives, so I've been around plenty of them. I have many feathered nieces and nephews, which range in size from a Blue & Gold macaw to pacific blue parrotlets. So I'm not a complete novice, I've just never had 24/7 care of a birdy before.

I do, however, have 2 aging little doggies, SIX female chinchillas (my passion!), a guinea pig and a dwarf hamster. I love all animals. We've been considering a birdy for many years, and I think the time is finally right.

I've told my friend to save the prettiest baby of his spring clutch for me, and in the meantime, I am researching and preparing. I have a nice big cage (32x20x36 - 56" if you count the stand) and I have been buying coop cups, perches, toys, etc. for the last few weeks.

I've also been watching lots of YouTube vidoes with lovies, just to see how they interact and what kind of toys they seem to prefer. I've read at least 6 different care sites on lovies, but they varied on information, and previous experience with my chinchillas has taught me that the best research comes from chatting with other owners, so here I am!

I think I am in a good position to be a great birdy mama, since the chins require a lot of the same kind of attention, out of the cage time, toys, etc.
I already buy in bulk from bird toy suppliers, and our local avian vet is the one who treats my chins, so I am already established there.

The chinchillas are crepuscular and we do playtime in the evenings, so a lovie should be a nice counterpoint to that, and he/she can have lots of playtime during the day with me.

Warning: I am going to lurk. I'll be on here reading as often as possible, and possibly, occasionally, asking a question or two. Since I am birdless, I probably won't be posting often, I will save that for when I finally bring my baby home.

I just wanted you guys to know who I am, and WHY I was lurking, so that you don't feel creeped out by it, lol. :09:

Welcome to the forum and feel free to ask questions. There are a lot of experienced bird keepers on here and they are very helpful. :)

Welcome to the forum :D Did you check the bar spacing on your cage?

I've only seen lovebirds at the pet store, they are so pretty! I love the blue mutation.

Thanks all!! I have an HQ cage, the bar spacing is .5" so I think I am good.

That's a REALLY nice cage - any lovebird you get will enjoy it. Lovebirds throw their seed quite a bit, so you might want to get a seed guard around the bottom of the cage. I used to have lovebirds, I had two at a time, then a while later I added two more, and then got one more - that one was a baby. I really enjoyed the lovebirds, their noise isn't annoying and if you tame your new lovebird, it will run over to be with you and be a cute little buddy. The baby one I got, I really tamed well (the other four were older when I got them and didn't tame that well) and I would even put it on my bicycle handle bars and go bike riding. I was in my 20's and that sounds crazy to do now, lol ... but it shows how tame the bird was.

That is a really nice cage :D If I ever got a small bird I plan to buy a flight cage like that.

I have a seed guard coming in this week from Drs Foster & Smith!! Actually, all those things inside the cage in the photo were returned, since I bought them last year for a bigger bird (Caique) that we were supposed to get but didn't. I'm starting from scratch again with perches and stuff, buying with a smaller bird in mind this time...
