Hi! My name is Mike. I'm not a parrot owner yet, but I'm researching to find the best fit for me.

I fell in love with birds over the last couple of years. I was volunteering at an animal shelter for a year and a half until they closed down. While I was there, I bonded with a Goffin's Cockatoo named Bébé. I wanted to adopt her when I found out that the shelter was closing, but alas I was too slow and she went to a shelter in Ontario. She has since been adopted by another family and I am thankful for that, despite wanting to take her home myself.

Anyways, now I'm looking to get a bird of my own, which is why I joined this forum. I want to make sure my future bird gets everything it needs to be happy with me.

Welcome - sounds like you are on the right track! Lots of good stuff to read here :)

Thank you for the warm welcomes. I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone.

Hello Mike and Welcome to the Forums.

Why not just do the same thing? Find out where your local bird rescues or sanctuaries are and visit. And as the *elders around here always suggest, let the bird pick you.

*(disclaimer- the use of the term elders by no means do I mean old. 😊 I mean seasoned in the world of parronting)

Hi Mike, welcome here.

Great prepwork!
Sorry you missed out on your first bird- sometimes it is not meant to be (and sometimes they come back after all / there is a fun tread about that as well - not mine btw)

Have fun!!

Hi Tami,

The problem is that I no longer have any bird shelters in my area. I'd have to visit out-of-province shelters, but it's hard to find the time to travel around those distances.

I'm going to keep researching though. If a bird comes up at a nearby shelter or at a breeder, I'll take the necessary steps to provide the best care :)

Thank you to everyone else for the warm welcomes!

Ahhh, I see. 🤔

Welcome Mike, thanks for helping at a shelter. Great place to meet many birds and become "chosen." Sorry you were not able to adopt Bebe. There are so many cockatoos in shelters (at least in the U.S.) and you might find a good match. I'll give a shout out to Goffins, my absolute favorite species!

Thank you, Scott! I hope I can find another bird that falls for me and I equally fall for too.

Welcome!

You're definitely our kind of folks!

I like your style... inquisitive, open-minded, responsible. I'm glad you're here. It will be great to share your journey.
