I'm a new member from Ireland. I have 6 Macaws, a breeding pair of B&G that lay infertile eggs. The male used to be a pet and after 3 years of being bonded still doesn't know what to do! He might learn some day, if not that's OK too. The other pair is a blue and gold male getting on in years. I was asked to take him and his first mate, they had been dreadfully treated in shocking conditions. Unfortunately the female died not long after I got them, she could barely walk and couldn't fly so I put in a lot of connected perches that connected the outside flight to the inside one and to the food dishes. They had been together for years (and I believe she had been breed over and over) the male was amazing with her he would go in front of her and wait for her to move along the perches. When she died I was very worried about him he hardly ate and started plucking. I had to do something fast. I looked for a female B&G but found none available. I did find a young but mature Greenwing, she is very calm and steady. After a couple of days of the male being suspicious and the female indifferent they decided they liked each other. The result being I have a 9 month old chick that I let them raise themselves because I think the male never had the chance to raise a chick and it was the first time for the female and I thought it would be good for her to raise her chick herself.
The other macaw is my much loved Greenwing macaw pet bird. I'm sorry if this message is too long I'll tell you about my other birds another time.

Welcome to the forums! I've always wanted to visit Ireland. And 6 macaws, wow!! That's a feat all on its own!

Welcome! I'm not familiar with Irish weather. Are your birds able to use their outdoor flights year round?

Hello, a warm welcome to you and your flock! What a sweet introduction, I can't wait to hear more. We would love to see photos if you'd like to share.

Thank you for your welcome everyone.

Sassibird, the winter here has become quite mild, more rain than anything else. We did have two days of snow. The birds are free to go inside or out when they want. They love to be out when it is raining, they spread their wings and really enjoy having a shower. If it gets very frosty they have heat lamps inside. They are Irish born and breed so I think like us humans they get acclimatized to the weather. I used to close the door to the outside flight when I though it was too cold for them but they were not having it. I found out how loud Macaws can be! Normally my macaws are not loud at all, they get loud at feeding times but that is all, and it doesn't last long.

Allee thank you, yes when I have learned my way around the forum I will be happy to post photos

Hi Itzjbean, I hope you do get come to Ireland for a visit.

That's great they get to go inside and outside as they please. I truly believe that when birds have the ability to be outside, smell fresh air and feel the sun on their feathers (and not just sitting inside on a perch all day) that they are more well-rounded, better behaved pets.

Welcome!
Glad you found us!
Can't wait to hear and see more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the forums, thank you for a very enjoyable introduction! Macaws are wonderful companions, and capable of much noise. Greenwings are my personal favorite!
