I rescued a cuban amazon about a week ago with no background info. It was being kept in a dog cage. It seems to have been handled for it steps up. It is very sweet so far. I have experience with birds. Any one have this species that could give me a little insite. It has been a plucker and it's now got fluff.

Nice! Congrats on your new friend. Cages are relatively cheap around here if you are okay with picking one up used. Sad to see your bird was a plucker. I had an amazon in my family when I was a kid. It was partial to only one person and very aggressive towards others regardless of our efforts to prevent that. Otherwise it was a terrific bird. A good talker. The body language was hard to read on that bird.

Best of luck!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome, kudos for rescuing an abused bird. I don't know much of Cuban Amazons, behavior likely similar with other sub-species. Please check two of our headline threads in our Amazon Forum: http://www.parrotforums.com/amazons/65119-i-love-amazons-going-journey.html

Birds pluck for many reasons, including health issues and stress or boredom. A visit with avian vet may isolate potential causes. http://www.parrotforums.com/behavioral/52217-plucking-search-answers.html
