We got ruby 8 months ago,She is a b/g macaw.I say she as that is what we was told and that she was a year old.The vet gave ruby a good bill of health and said she was young but could not say how young. All was well ruby could already say a few words and after 2 weeks would roll on her back while we played. All has been well just the norm bits like going through perches on a very regular basis and making as much noise as poss by springing the cage.
But the last 2 weeks ruby as started to scream as soon as any one talks and nothing we have tried stops her except putting her in another room so any ideas are welcome.

Cheers Roy,

Best thing to do is just completely ignore the screaming. Has she had a health check recently as she might be screaming due to something bothering her?

Has anything else in the house changed, someone dyed their hair, new piece of furniture etc?

Welcome, we'd all love to see some pics of Ruby :)

Welcome to the forum, Roy.

Mayden has already suggested some reasons for the screaming. It could be illness/injury, trying to get attention, feeding off of someone in the family's anxiety/depression, jealousy or something else altogether.

Is she on the correct diet? Does she have full spectrum lighting?

Thankyou for your replys,I am almost sure it is attention as ruby can be doing anything like eating or playing in her cage and as soon as any one talks to each other she will go stright to the side of the cage at the top hang with just her beak and scream then about 1 min after you stop talking she will go back to what she was doing. we tried putting ruby in the cage in the hall which stops her but when you bring her back all is well untill you talk unless it is to ruby.

Roy,

That does sound like she wants all the attention. Does she still do it when she is out of her cage and able to interact with the family, and be a part of the activities and talking? If not, getting a stand or play gym for her could be a good solution if you don't already have one. Then you could bring her into the room you are eating in, or watching TV in, etc. I think maybe she just wants to be as much a part of the family as the human members.

Ruby is in the room where we spend most of the time, When she is out she is fine.We have a very large java tree for her but all she wants todo is chew it so we got a play stand for her the only problem is ruby will spend 2 mins on them then climb down and come over to me and if you put her back she will just climb down again and come back to me.

Lol! They are smart, aren't they? You may have to put some kind of large tray partway down the post that she can't get around. However she may jump off! Are her wings clipped? If not, you could try a large boing hanging from the ceiling. I know Java trees are expensive, but macaws CHEW. In the wild their job is to put the top 1/3 of the forest on the ground, which provides food for other animals.

When we first got ruby she came with a small cage and cloths rail joined with a broom handle which is in the 2nd photo and she used it like a firemans pole so then came the java tree no problem getting down off that so the play stand has a round tray on top of the leg so she swings with her beak until her legs get hold of the stand then slides down that.A few time she has flown off but she is not to good yet. When we got ruby she had been cliped but we have let them grow i do not want her cliped if it can be avoided. we have got an aviator harness and flight cord for her when we get her used to it and the weather gets better. We changed the cage and got a rainforrest nova 2 which i used 1 half.

I would train her then to stay put. You will need to keep putting her back and tell her, "Stay", and reward her every so often for doing so. At first you will have to reward her very often, then try going father between rewards. I believe they are smart enough to learn this.

Welcome :) Ruby is beautiful !
Sounds like she is throwing a temper tantrum ! IMO , it seems like you have to ride out the noise , and reward the good behaviour , but make sure she knows when she is being good , treat immediatley in the beginning and tell her she is a good girlie
But like was mentioned before , make sure she is healthy and nothing is bothering her.
Happy training :)

Hi Roy and welcome to the Forum:D I also am in the UK.... Ruby is beautiful... It defo sounds like she is screaming for attention... The best thing to do when she does it, is totally ignore.. its hard to do, but ride it out and eventually she will stop when she realises screaming does not get her any attention at all :D

Thankyou all for your comments we will hopefully get through it without to many headaches.
