Hi All. I am new to the forum. Over the years, I have had a Hahn's macaw and a rescued senegal-both of which were wonderful. We lost our aged senegal several months ago. I am currently on a breeder's list for an Indian Ringneck- waiting for some comments in the species specific forum to help me decide on sex. I am very excited but also a bit nervous. I believe we have selected the right bird species for us but might need some guidance through the adolescent period. With my two previous birds, I was more than blessed. The macaw was a baby when I got it (unsexed) and the senegal was an adult rescue, also unsexed. We had no adjustment issues at all. They were both part of the family and had a cage in the living room so they had plenty of interaction with us. We never saw any aggressiveness of any type, although my macaw did prefer me. Our senegal "loved" my husband but never had any problems coming to me. In all the years of having birds, I have never been bit. Not sure if I was lucky or just had some uncanny ability to read their moods. If they seemed cranky, I let them have their space and never pushed them. My macaw talked a lot but only about 16 words but would mix them up and speak in phrases. Once he looked down at a cat and said "what's that?" He went everywhere outdoors with me including camping trips across the country. Our senegal whistled and sang and was happy but never spoke.
Some other things about me. I am recently retired and am home to spend plenty of time with a baby bird. We live on a "mini" farm of 6+ acres. I fondly call it the "below the knee farm". We have four dogs (male and female newfoundland, female aussie and male sheltie), 13 chickens, 2 cats and 7 angora rabbits. We have five grown children and five grandchildren. I have a number of hobbies but they pretty much all keep me home: I spin fiber, knit, do primitive rug hooking, stained and fused glass, and garden.
