Hey guys, My name is Melissa. I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. I currently have a gold capped conure (sage) and a senegal (mango). My story is a little long I guess.
I actually got into the bird world by volunteering at a local bird rescue. I had never really been around birds before that but I was always an animal lover. I found a rescue around here that was looking for help so I went out there. Most of the birds at this rescue are the bigger guys, macaws and toos so I got introduced into the bird world rather quickly I guess. Mango actually came from that rescue. I met her at a fundraising event we had when she had just come into the rescue and she decided to hang out with me all day. I ended up bringing her home a few weeks after that.
Sage I actually got as a baby from a local store. I happened to be there one day getting food for Mango and I guess I kinda got suckered in by his cuteness... The breeder was actually there and while I was looking at other things he brought him out to me. This breeder does an excellent job socializing his babies and Sage would even do headstands on my hand when he first met me.... I guess that was the end of it, I bought a new cage and took him home that day.
I also have a beautiful two year old little boy name Liam. He loves the birds and although he is too young to really handle them on his own he loves watching them and petting them when I have them out. I am somewhat leery of him petting Mango because she didn't have the best beginning to life so she is jumpy but he does pet her when I have her held against my chest so she is more secure. Sage is great with him and will let him pet him whenever. I am still very careful to remind him to not move too fast around either of the birds and so far he does great with them.
So anyway, that was my kinda long story. . . I've got a few questions about an african grey I might be bringing home but I will take those over to the grey forum. I look forward to getting to know you guys!
