Charlie - 13 yr old RB2
Hi everyone :)
So Charlie and I take showers together after I come home from work and exercise, pretty much every day, and that's when he behaves the best I think. He sings with me and stands in the water and we dance etc lol so shower time has been our sole hangout time daily..

Unfortunately when the shower is over and we head back out, he's already going crazy and trying to get on the floor or tear up the chairs or shoes or couches. When I get him away from that, he's pooping on the carpet or biting me for moving him or running around screaming. It's just very exhausting and hard to deal with. :(

The only way to get him to chill is to obviously put him back in his cage but I feel so bad doing that when I'm home.. I really try giving him opportunities to come out and just sit with me but he doesn't want to. He has a playtop with toys and I put nuts and fruits up there sometimes. That work for like 5 minutes and then when I turn my back he is on the floor running after my husbands feet or the dog.

It was cute for the first couple of weeks and now it's getting to be too much. I am thinking about saving up and getting him a big outdoor aviary so maybe he can just get all that energy out through the day. He's so WILD! And I love him and want to spend time with him but I'm so much more chill and he's hard to keep up with!!
Please help guys!!! <3 thanks so much. :)

Hello! Well lucky you for having a high active RB2 'cos I have the opposite - 'you pays your money and takes you choice' LOL.

Expend some of that energy before shower time, try to get him flying up and down many times or even up the stairs. I let Plum out then run like crazy to call him from upstairs, it works some of the time. Perhaps integrate this into the pre shower time (you're gonna say you live in a bungalow aren't you?) Make the shower the end of playtime so he can then sit in his cage to dry and preen those feathers.

Feet and shoe biting = bad behaviour and treat it as such, I broke that habit on the whole although he likes teasing hubby.

He needs stuff to do, so do trick training - balls in cups etc. If you can rid that excess energy the hope is he will be less naughty.

Poop on the carpet = just one of those things and joy of being a parront.

Yep we do trick training sometimes too and it only excites him and makes him want to go do something more exciting like run on the floor or chew everything.

No we don't have stairs, and his wings are growing in but he doesn't fly around. :/

I can't just sit there with him training him the entire time he is out, and he is too high energy for my quiet household. I have a very stressful job and when I get home I just want to sit and hang out with my dog and bird. Why did I have to end up with such an active one?!?!

We're a little newer to Galah ownership, but I have noticed Rhubarb has two modes - high energy crazy bird, and peaceful shoulder jockey. Unfortunately, #2 only comes after we have #1 out of the system.

A couple of things I noticed though are:

#1 - We've made eating a foraging fun time for him, and spread food out in various places on our kitchen island. He expends a lot of energy running around to sample the various nummies, and we enjoy the show, especially when he gets his "cockatoo eyes" when he is actively engaged in eating.

#2 - If he still seems a bit rangy, we give him one of his favorite toys in the world - either a ziploc bag, or some packing paper. He will usually expend much energy and excitement rolling on it, biting it, etc.

After about 15 minutes of "attack the bag", he makes his "honky-honky" noise, meaning "Time to come pick me up and put me on your shoulder".

#3 - When people sit down with him, if he's still rangy, he takes off and engages in all sorts of unproductive behavior. However, if you're standing or moving, he's happy to ride around with you, and it does take him effort to hang on and climb up and down you while you're doing chores. This also helps him mellow, so that when you sit down, he's just happy to hang out.

Good luck with your little guy, and possibly an outdoor aviary is what he needs to get energy out of his system before you get home. Even a bigger cage with lots of engaging toys and activities might be a help.

Just to clarify are these plastic bags? From experience Plum and the other one end up trying to eat them if given half the chance. Paper bags are good or kitchen towel/roll middles are also fun. BTW Rhubarb will settle down slowly over time and flying is a great source of energy reducing. :)
