Hi everyone,

Concern #1, I know this is a parrot forum. I am assuming others love all mammals as much as I do. I have an American Labrador Retriever. He is extremely high energy. He is a tornado. We have not been able to find anything that wears him out. We swim him, and he gets a lot of high impact exercise. He doesn’t have listening skills what so ever. He bursts out of his kennel especially at dinner time, and runs to his food bowl. We had to replace our wood floors because he destroyed them. We’ve tried an e-collar he is very sensitive to it, and will have mental breakdowns if he gets stemmed. My German shepherd I can stem at the highest level, and it doesn’t faze him if we are on walks, and another dog runs up to him. My German shepherd has high drive, but he isn’t a bundle of energy that turns into a tornado.

Concern #2, My American Labrador Retriever jumps on my 13 year old German Shepherd who has a lot of medical issues which is why he isn’t free in our house. My German Shepherd has had surgery on both hind legs for torn CCL’s, he has hip dysplasia, and the beginning stages of degenerative myelopathy.

Does anyone have experience with high energy dogs, and has suggestions that may be beneficial to this situation?

Thank you in advance

Nice looking dogs! I dont know much about dogs other than that Labrador retrievers need a lot of exercise and space but it sounds like you have and do everything he needs. How old is he? It sounds like he's still a puppy. My sister got an 8 week old puppy a few months ago, her first dog, and she's learned that puppies are a lot of work because they need to be taught everything and her puppy is relatively easy
He sounds like a real handful to say the least! I hope your Shepard doesn't get injured. It seems like you need help from a professional trainer. Even if you've had a lot of dogs and have trained your own dogs before, some are just harder to train than others. Kinda like kids. Some are easy and some are so much more challenging.

Do you live on a lake? It looks beautiful there. I live on a lake in Maine and it's like paradise here, especially with all the awful stuff going on in some parts of the country.

My husbands family has a cabin in northern Minnesota. We are on Mississippi River a lot. Both my husband, and I are outdoorsy, hyper, can’t sit still people.

The education I’ve gotten from our vet is that American Labrador retrievers are in comparison to the Belgian malinois for energy. We didn’t know the differences in Labrador retriever breeds. The English one is significantly more calm. We don’t regret our Labrador retriever. We just don’t know how to handle his energy levels. We are guessing he ran 10-15 miles in a field one of the times my husband was training with him. He just needs a little nap, or drink, and he’s ready for more activities. My husband looked exhausted.

He was born February of 2023
