i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
I keep reading about the "hot three" I know that amazons are one of them. I have searched and cannot find any info on what the other two are or what exactly it speaks to. Could someone let me know what it means.

Which is also the three most popular, especially when years ago they were the only ones around in the pet trade and people knew very little about their needs.

Hot 3 are 3 species of amazon whom pick up bad and troubled habits and rather fast.
The 3 were stated above. Yn, Bf, Dyh. There still great birds. They just have more of a hormonal stage than others.

The "Hot 3" is just a label that someone made up & wrote about.
I love Amazons, I have had personal experience with 5 different Amazons.
One I owned for over 10 years & he was the best parrot that I have ever owned. He was a male Yellow Nape that I got when he was about 1 year old. I now have 2 Yellow Napes & I am considering a third Amazon. Their wonderful "out there" humorous, comical personality is what I love about them. My female Yellow Nape Lila I trust enough to have on my shoulder. She loves to be close. She has never bitten me hard, but she does "threaten to" by making a growling sound & coming at my hand with her beak like she is going to bite, but I am not afraid of her as I know what she is really like. I would not let a child handle my Amazons, that would be a mistake, but they are wonderful companion pets for an adult.

How much "worse" are the "hot three" than the other amazons? Id like to know from some people with some actual experience with these birds. All you can find is horror stories online about how bad they are and how they will dive bomb and attack anyone that comes near them when they are in their hormonal phase. Im not really scared of the aggresion personally. I can deal with aggressive animals. Its others I worry about. I plan on getting a blue front, preferably a male, and this is what has me worried the most. I know it can differ from bird to bird but as a generalization.

In the species Amazona I have had 3 Yellow Napes, 1 Double Yellow Head, & 1 Yellow Fronted Amazon, so all of them except the Yellow Fronted were in the so called "Hot 3". The Yellow Fronted was very emotionally damaged from being abused in a previous home, I only had him for a few months as a foster bird. So I apologize but I can not give you comparisons because I love the Yellow Napes & the Double Yellow Head & I have not had personal experience with other members of the Amazona species at this time.
