Hot under the wings

So I was doing some harness training with Eddie today. One of the behaviours is to lift up each wing so he gets comfortable with me handling his wings in funny ways. While I was doing this I noticed that under his wings, approximately the point which we would call the 'arm pit', was extremely hot. We were doing this out under the veranda and it was a warm day today (not hot though). Is this normal? Everything else seemed to be okay. This was the first day he has spent outside for a while though.

I confess, I don't really know about the in's and out's or when under the wing would be classed too hot.

I can tell you that every bird I've ever had was warm under there.....I just reckoned that was where they stored heat? Bit like us under the arms and in our thighs?

Also, when Cal is preening me, she sometimes sort of opens her wing and pulls herself in close to me when it's nearly bed time. I think it's a case of: We're settling down for the night - time to share the body warmth. Very kind lol. It's also very warm under there. So much so I feel it when she's gone.

Yea I knew it was warm under there, but wow this was hot lol. I guess he was just worn out from flapping around on a warm day. The weather is finally starting to clear up and we are getting nice warm Australian days (although soon we will all be panting and complaining about the extreme heat lol). So Eddie and Buddy are enjoying some time out under the veranda, where they can get plenty of exercise.

Cal is such a sweetie, that saves money on hot water bottles, heated blankets and air-cons. Just grab yourself a friendly conure

(How unnatural, it's 11am! haha)

I knew there was a section in a book I have about warmth under the wings, so I had a quick peek to check I hadn't forgotten anything.

It says, when a bird wants to cool down, they'll hold their wings away from their body without opening them and pant a bit. It says just to help with a fine mist of cold water. I'm sure you already knew all that though! I really do think Eddie was just enjoying the sunshine lol.

I was told many years ago by a breeder that feet are a great indicator also. If Cal's feel a lil chilly I crank up the heating for her.

So difficult with our feathered friends, it really is lol!!!!

Maybe we need to train them to converse!!!

"I feel a bit ill today"
"I'm too hot, can we go inside"
"I want a bath"
"can you turn the heating up?"

Cal is indeed a sweetie pie. I'd recommend one of her to anyone lol. Shame the people round here can't get it into their heads she's here forever.

If I had £1 for everytime someone asks if she's for sale or "if you do ever want rid of her". What planet do these people live on?? It's not mine!

I think all is well. Eddie would have spread his wings if he felt he was hot. You should probably post this under the "you know you're a parront when..." thread. Lol
