I'm curious, how did you pick your birds' name? Not sure if there is a thread out there like this already, but I thought it would be fun to share!

I got my two tiels when they were 3-4 years old and they already had names, but I renamed them when I got them. (the male's name was Angel, as his previous owner got him as a baby and thought he was a she, lol)

Their names are Boo & Peach. Boo is a Whiteface grey, and when we first got him had a habit of landing on your shoulder suddenly, and so 'Boo!' seemed appropriate, also given his colors. Peach is a cinnamon pearl, and her chest reminds me so much of peach fuzz, and so Peach it was. I'm also a big fan of Nintendo's Mario games, and both Peach & Boo are characters in the game, so it just fit.

I'd love to hear other's stories! :):yellow1::white1:

Perjo's father and mother were both supposedly from Hawaii. So I wanted a Hawaiian name, and she was described as huge for a baby female CAG, so I researched Hawaiian names for large or giant. At one point I came across the name Perjo. But when I go back to research it again now I can never find the resourece or any other in which Perjo shows up.

So now I wonder if I was seeing things.

Either way that's her name and it's going to remain her name.

Let's see...

Goofy: While we're not Goofy's original humans, we (or at least MrC) has known him for his entire life. He used to belong to MrC's brother in law, who got him from a breeder as a baby. Goofy used to have a lot of trouble staying on his perch when he was a baby, and his breeder kept calling him a "big goof", which eventually just stuck as "Goofy". So that's his name. My oldest son calls him Angry Chicken, and I refer to him on unrelated online forums as The Evil Attack Parrot (tm).

Leo: Leo was a re-home and his name used to be "Jingle Bells". We thought that was an awful name for a bird, and he didn't recognize his name, so we set out to think of a new name. I couldn't think of one, so I posted his picture on my Facebook page and asked for suggestions. One of my stranger friends replied with a list of names, one of which was Leopold, and I thought that worked for him. Eventually it shortened to Leo. My oldest son calls him Chicken Nugget.

Charlotte: She's a rescue and her name was Scarlett when we got her. I kept screwing it up and calling her Charlotte. I didn't particularly like her name, but she recognized it, so I wasn't going to change it. The mess ups were not on purpose. But she responded to Charlotte, and I liked that better, so I just kept it. My oldest son calls her the Red Headed Wonder Chicken.

Oscar: He came with the name. It suits him. Sometimes I call him Mr. The Grouch when he's in a bad mood. My oldest son has not given him a nickname yet.

Liam and Angelo: My youngest son's birds and he named them. I have no idea why he decided on those names.

I asked an 8 year old "what do you want to name her"

Nigel - named by my husband. We all thought the name worked so it stuck.

I named Lincoln after a character from a TV show... >>
His previous name was Ferari because the owners were avid car lovers.

When I adopted my male ekkie, he was called Porker. That couldn't stand. But he could say Porker a few different ways so we went with a name similar to it, Parker. It actually suits him quite well.

Molly was already named Molly at the pet store and we thought it was cute. She recognizes her name so we decided not to change it. I got a gender test yesterday and results in a week...Guess if she is a boy I'll have to rename her. /Cry

I didn't know some of those stories! After all this time...

I've told this before, buttttttt...

His first mimicry inspiration was a parrot in the bird store where I found him as a 3 month old chick... a Hahn's. He was much bigger than the Hahn's (and smaller than a B&G hen who was courting him). He didn't care much for the other birds but DID learn to say the Hahn's name... Rickey. "Rickey" and "Hello, Rickey". I had no idea he'd ever learn more words/names, so I left it as was. OH MAN, I HAD SO MANY CUTE NAMES IN MIND!!!! I had no idea he'd be a good mimic.
As the years went by, he developed such a reputation of rude and innapprprpriate behavior that people just started objectfying him as "the Rickeybird".
Funny thing, though... he STOPPED saying "Rickey"... hasn't said his own name in 20 years.

Green cheeks are from Brazil and the surrounding area, so I gave my baby a pretty name from there- Julietta, but everyone including me calls her Juliet.

Oooooooooh, may I pronounce that "Hoo-lee-etta?"
How beautiful (hermosa)!

Same way we name all the animals in the family. Everyone gets 2 or 3 slips of paper to write their name selection on it, they go into a hat and 1 gets pulled out. I'd hate to tell you some of the names Salty might bear. Zorp, Mr. Feathers, names from Final Fantasy, and of course Salty. Our Cairne terrier was named the same way. SHe wound up with Tinker ( not Tinkerbelle, though many a vet assumed).

tbh I got my first bird ( a budgie) when I was in middle school and I had the wonderful creativity to name it birdy.
...it gets worse, I got him a companion budgie and her name was Birdy2.

I attempted to improve my naming skills when I got my first cockatiel, he was named Chirper because he was the loudest out of his siblings. My other option was calling him Pooper because the second reason I decided to get him was he pooped on my dad when I passed him over to hold, but I was benevolent and decided Chirper sounded more respectable for a bird.

I also had two more cockatiels previously, one was named Twilight due to the different shades of grey on her wings. Another I got from a friend and was named Athena because she thought the bird appeared very smart.

This was all like...10 years ago. I think my naming skills have improved somewhat. I recently had to think of a name for my male African Grey. I had one main prerequisite for the name in that I didn't want anything to sound too much like an already exiting common word, which ruled out names such as Ben because it sounds too much like "been." I also didn't want to name him "Alex" because there's already a famous African Grey named Alex and I don't want him to be compared. I preferred the name to be 1-2 syllables as well so it would be easy for him to repeat/recognize.

My friend (who is going to be my bird's godmother) and I are currently split on Earl (a pun on Earl Grey tea) or Tobi (which...is actually a bit too similar to "to be" but acceptable enough). We'll actually decide when he comes home to us, he's still being weaned. Maybe something else will strike us as more suitable then.
