Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
Im guessing by their call but im still wondering.....

With most species the only real way to tell is through DNA, luckily you can get a DNA test done for about $20 or so.

I just realized I read your post wrong, I thought it said, how to tell the difference, not how do parrots tell the difference. Sorry about that. I'm sure they take a lot of things into consideration, calls, feather colors, pheromones and smell.

Yeah thats what I was thinking...

Thats a good question, if we find the answer we don't have to use dna test

My money is on UV colors that they see quite readily that we are entirely blind to.

Yes! as well as behaviours... The genders behaves differently...

I just spent the entire day sniffing Guavo and starring at him through my UV frames. Now I'm seeing spots and can't stop sneezing, but I still don't know the sex of my parrot.

Auggie's Dad, I took Sprite to the vet today and the vet said that birds know by UV colors that we cant see :)
lexx, LOL!!!! Im gonna get Sprite sexed but Im scared he wont trust me after I start plucking his feathers :( :(

Interesting question, as parrots aren't supposed to have a very good sense of smell, which I guess is how most animals tell. But parrots can tell male and female humans apart it seems. I'd say their fantastic eyesight and intelligence helps them notice extremely miniscule details that we might not notice.

My vet suggested i not be in the room while puck was getting groomed and blood drawn. she was right! he was very upset by the whole process, but then i was able to rescue him! he had been being quite aggressive with me up until that point, but he changed his tune after than! lol! i guess i'm a lot better in comparison to the mean lady who did all those things to him!
