How important is a baby bird's sleep schedule?

Hello all

I have an almost 5 month old GCC, Cosmo, and I've been having the hardest time keeping her sleep schedule consistent. I'm worried it may have negative consequences in the future and I was wondering what experienced owners might suggest.

I live in a college dorm like setting. It's an apartment, but everything is primarily in one room, so my desk, my bed, and Cosmo's cage are all in very close proximity to each other. I stay up late really often (I typically go to bed at 1 or 2 AM) and even if I cover her cage, she usually doesn't go to bed until I do. She has opportunities to sleep while I'm at class, but I'm not entirely sure that's healthy.

I try to put her to bed at no later than 12, and I very well may be worrying over nothing, but she doesn't seem to get enough sleep. Is there something else I should try or should I not worry?

I think schedule time is not required. If his sleeping time is enough then it's okay.

As a general rule our parrots require 10/12 hours sleep per night. For example my 'too wants and does go to bed at 8pm and we hear him at 8am.

See if you can improve on this, ie no later than 10pm, use some dark covering for the cage and try and reduce noise. There can be issues arise due to an insufficient sleep schedule, so see what you can sort out for little Cosmo? You would be pretty grotty eventually if someone kept you up til all hours wouldn't you? Perhaps reigning in your sleep schedule could be better for you also?

much like plum said keeping it consistant and for a baby especially 12 hours I recommend.

Cage cover and turning the volume down of stuff/turning lights off is the way to go. My place is open plan and my guy got his 10 hours every night. I just had to make a point of bed time and keeping things quieter until I went to sleep. They can sleep through a little noise but not much and if they see you're still awake they want to join you.

Of course she does probably sleep during the day but it's not the same as getting a full night's rest

I agree as well. My Grey goes to bed every night at 8 & always gets 12 hours of sleep. You need to make some changes for her wellbeing.

Good Luck.

My birds also do best with a solid 12 hour sleep schedule. I bought cozzzy covers for their cages which blocks out almost all the light. They immediately go quiet at 7 pm when the covers go on. They are in my master bedroom at night and I'm a bit of a night owl. I watch all my tv shows on my iPad with a pair of headphones to not disturb the birds (and my hard working husband. Lol).

So your hubby sleeps with three girls then :D

This is a reason I discourage students living in dorm/apartments to own birds... your schedule is so up in the air with classes and staying up late and your life is far from settled. I hope you can find a way to make your sleeping schedule for your bird more consisten, they thrive on routine and consistency.

LOL plumsmum yeah my schedule changes from time to time when I do work and don't work. So my bird might go to bed at 5pm when I leave or might stay up with me till 7ish Pm. But when it's time to go to bed he certainly lets me know he will start squawking till we go to bed then I sometimes have to pretend to sleep till he nods off then I come back downstairs to the man cave to watch movies.
