So I took Scarlet in the shower with me for the first time and at first I thought she hated it and hated me for it. When I tried to put her back on her perch in the bathroom (outside of the shower) she started to open her wings and make her way up my arm to go back in lol. So I brought her back in the shower and she was just in heaven....10 minutes later and about 3 other tries to get her back on her perch, I finally had to force her on her perch so I could take MY shower (lol ya know, the one with soap). Is it okay for her to be in water for that long? I dont want to hurt her feathers or skin or anything crazy. Scarlet is clearly okay with it but she is also okay with eating nothing but habanero popcorn too and that wont fly ;)

Well considering some parrots are from rain forests where in rains almost all the time, I don't think a shower should hurt her.;)

Mine have been swimming before. So long as they don't get too cold,or hot, they should be OK with a long shower. Let them dry somewhere warm without a draft, being that wet it will take awhile.

Greybeard dries quickly, as his feathers repel water.
Chewbaca dries slowly, as her feathers soak up water.

Yeah , Jake the hen YN has jumped off the side of the boat in the ocean, had to turn around and pick her up with a dip net, LOL < but really, she's been swimming a couple of times in calm water with me. Not really swimming but suspended in the water, floating is probably more accurate. As long as she was still on my arm, she didn't seem to mind, not stressed out . However parrots don't really swim.

Have had too many stories of birds drowning because they got loose and their parents could not get to them. I personally would not chance it.
I suppose playing in a tub would be a different situation....

Kazi will use up all the hot water if I'll let him. I finally positioned his perch so I could leave him in there without having to hold the shower head for him :D Last time he took a nearly 30 minute shower and spent the whole time singing and laughing and telling himself what a good boy he is.

Until they shrivel up like a person's fingers do if they are in the water too long!!

Sorry, having too much fun today!

I have a Yellow Naped Amazon who rarely leaves his perches on his own. He loves taking showers getting soaked through in the process (stands on the floor of the tub and has a fine time while I shower) and he often dunks his head in his water dish and laughs as he flings his head to spray water about!

I am very embarrassed to admit that while camping my husband left him alone for less than a minute and that would be one of the rare times he left his perch. He found the bird swimming in the middle of a pond. He was doing a breast stroke with his wings (which are clipped) and his head was not even wet. It must have taken me two minutes to swim out to him, and when I got close he swam about eight feet toward me. I put him on my back and he was breathing a little heavy but just fine otherwise.

I would not have believed it if I had not seen it for myself, but boy were we thankful that he could swim!

Parrots dont swim they drown!!! The shower sounds fine.

Guess i need to make a video.

Well? Where is it? This is worthless without pictures...moving pictures.

Yeah Captain... Looks like it's been a couple years since you promised. Remember??? :11:

LOL. We've also had swimming birds... The budgies were bathed ONCE in a shallow amount of water in the tub. They were cute as lil ducks floating with tiny feet paddling :)... Until one jumped on the other's back and pushed him completely underwater. He lived to tell about it, but no more swimming for them :52:

There you go! They not only swim, some even do the breast stroke! :D

Jolly, one of my eclectus would bathe as long as I let him! The others love it as well but I actually need to call the time with him or I swear he would stay in there forever!

I have four that will stay in the shower until you turn the water off on them...

It's good for them. It radically improves feather quality, makes it easier to open pin feathers, lessens dander, and just basically makes them feel better.

I had a sun conure that also went swimming, and henpecked is right. They open their wings, and then do the breast stroke...

I on the other hand nearly had a heart attack...

Gil also LOVES showers. He flashes his eyes when I say "want shower" and bring him with me, and then makes all these 'ooh' and 'aaah' sounds. I have a shelf in the shower that he uses while I shower and then I let him have his turn under the water.

He has learned to say "go poop" so I can hold him over the drain (he used to poop off the shelf and it was kind of yucky while I was showering, but he has learned the routine now.)

He once jumped in the bath tub with me....I thought he may like to visit with me during my bath and had him standing on the side of the tub. I was lying back, relaxing and he suddenly just jumped in. :D I no longer bring him during my bath because it's hard to relax when I have to watch him so closely. He just does the showers now.

Dang, had her at the lagoon fishing with me the other day, didn't think to try and get a video. I'll try once again to get some video of jake "swimming".

I think I have the world's only macaw that hates water. I've never met a mac that didn't love showers before.
