I am going to adopt a yellow napped amazon

Hello everyone. I am new in here. I am going to adopt a yellow naped amazon from a person in local. The bird seems don't have a mental band and the owner said the bird is seven years old. I really need some advices about how to tell a bird' sage and healthy or not. Here is the link of the bird. Thanks.

Hi... What made you settle on this bird in particular?

You can only tell if a bird is completely healthy by taking it to an AVIAN (bird) vet, and in addition to a visual inspection, having a fecal test, having blood tests done for viral diseases, as well as a blood panel for organ function. Keep in mind a bird can have perfect feathering, and act perfectly normal on the outside, so a visual is no guarantee of overall health.

Age - unless the bird is very young it's impossible to tell whether they're 7, 12, 16, 23, etc. you get the idea. Amazons are very long lived birds though.

Do you have bird experience? A YNA can be quite a handful if you're completely new... just saying.

I'm by far no expert...only had my quaker for 2 months and my o.w.a for 10 days,but I say as long as u can devote plenty of time to it and provide for..go for it . Love my babies so much.I don't work so I spend all day with them,I give them cage time too,so they aren't too overly attached, but so far so good.. wouldn't trade it for nothing so so so glad I made the decision,matter of fact in a few months I plan on just 1 more final bird..lol..still debating between 2 species.gonna give it time. Are there any other bird species you're thinking about? Have you had birds before, having an Amazon could be really tricky and well, not easy for a "beginner". Amazons, from what I've heard are: unpredictable, loud, destructive, and very stubborn. There might be other Amazons that might be a little easier for you.

I would have to go along with saying the bird is 7. I'd ask the owner where the bird was purchased and if he's in a vet record to see if the age is there.

RavensGryf is right, the only way to determine a birds health is through an Avian Vet. It also depends if the bird was living indoors or not. If he/she was an outdoor bird there's a higher risk of diseases.

Also, make sure you get to meet the bird first. You might end up with a bird that is aggressive or not the kind of bird you were hoping for. If they refuse to let you meet the bird, don't go for it! Did the person give you the reasons why they need to rehome their Amazon?

Hi...I would try to find out as much as possible about the YNA. As far as age and health, an avian vet can tell you if it's healthy, but there's no real way to tell age, even for a vet. They can probably take a guess and say if they "think" the bird is young or old, but that's about it. They live an extremely long time though (I believe up to 80 years??) so, I would be more concerned with health than age. When I got my BFA I was lucky enough to track the info on her leg band to the aviary that she came from. I was told that yes, she is about 12 years.

I would do ALOT of research on amazons and see if it would be a good fit for you. Go meet the bird and see what the temperament is. Find out as much as you can about the background, diet, schedule, is the bird handled, does it get out of the cage, does it have a local vet, likes and dislikes...etc.

Not sure if it's just me but having to do decide on a species is the hardest. My choices always seem to end up going in a circle, but I'm so excited to see yoi with a new addition one day!
