I am looking for some honest advice!

Hi everybody I am not a parrot owner yet, ( I have 2 zebra finches)
I am seriously in love with parrots and have been going to a rescue centre for a few weeks now to adopt. I am madly in love with a couple or green cheek conures but they are not very social ( I think they have been really neglected )

The lady at the rescue shelter told me to start with cockatiels because they are gentle and good with kids. Love Love Love LOVE the cockatiels but I have my heart set on the conures ....


WHAT SHOULD I DO FELLOW PERROT OWNERS? plz help....Should I start with the cockatiels being that I don't really have much experience or should I give it my all and follow my heart?

I am willing to dedicate my time and energy to what ever birds I get so no matter what I will love and cherish the opportunity that is given to me!

I am so dedicated that i've been trying to train my finches LOL ( they only sit on my hand for like 20 seconds and they eat out of my hands)

Actually, CGC's are very sweet and loving. They are also great beginners birds. I don't have a parrot yet, and they are on my short list. Also, cockatiels have lots of feather dust that can be troublesome to those with allergies. I say go for it, with work I think you could gain their trust. Good luck!

I would go with a GCC, they are awesome little birds and what you want to get.

Since you work at the shelter, you see how many birds are given up because they are not the "right fit" for various situations, and people no longer want them. What I am getting at is, get what you want. If you don't want the 'tiels, don't get them. Because you are adopting a bird that may be with you for 20 years. Will you keep it that long? Or will you accept the responsibility of several birds and later get the Conure you want? Only take in what you are willing to live with for the remainder of it's life. That's a forever home.

I'll agree with the others about going with...A...GCC...not a pair, but...A...conure. Bonded birds, of any specie will usually spend the majority of their time together & avoid you.....

Be sure your finches are never within beak's distance of a larger bird as the chance is excellent that the finch(es) will be on the loosing end of any encounter. Now that you're moving into parrots with attitudes, learn about setting limits & establishing control.....once you bring your new friend home, there will be a transition period & then your new bird will start showing its true colors & testing what it can & can't get away with.

I agree with everyone else, get what you want! It's a very very long commitment and you might as well start with what you want!

I said a pair because they've been together since day one...would they get depress if I separate them?

If they are not bonded, they are fine to seperate. Do not seperate if they feed each other, preen each other, play with the same toy together, and sleep close to each other. Otherwise they're just close friends, and will adjust to the seperation.

Hi melanie1985 & welcome to the forum. Green cheeks are really very sweet parrots to own. Of course re-homed ones will come with baggage from their former owners. But that doesn't mean it is impossible to work through that with a loving understanding new home & owner. You are on the right track for that loving relationship with a conure.

I have a GCC I was given by her former owner. The lady had to take on extra work & didn't feel she was giving Peta enough attention. Since Peta came from a loving home & was taken care of very well, the transition to my home went very smoothly & I was able to have her out on my shoulder the first night she was here. Peta is a total sweetheart & I am blessed to be owned by her.
