Sunshine (Pineapple Green Cheek Conure)
I always wanted a bird ever since I was young. I became fascinated with parrots in High School ever since I heard a story about one of my neighbors and their African Grey, Pooky. (Pooky was a clumsy bird when she was little, always falling off her perch, so she'd be calmed down with an "It's alright, Pooky, it's okay." A much older bird now, she was hanging out in the sun room when she caught the attention of a passing hawk. Her family heard a loud "BANG!" and wandered in to see Pooky pacing back and forth on the windowsill calming herself down, "It's alright, Pooky, it's okay. *Whew* It's alright, Pooky, it's okay!")

This weekend, I was in the pet store to purchase cat litter (I have two cats) and took a look at the birds first like I usually do. The last bird I looked at stole my heart away, she was hanging upside-down from the top of her cage and chirping happily at me when I walked by. When I went to walk away she tried to follow (still upside-down) and kept chirping. I came back and she snuggled up next to the side of her cage and just looked at me intelligently until I sadly pulled myself away to get what I came for.
One of the women who worked there stopped me in the cat section and asked if I needed any help. It turns out she was the resident "bird" expert on duty that day, so I took it as a sign.

So now I have the privileged of sharing my household with Sunshine the Pineapple Green Cheek Conure as well.

She's an absolute joy. I'll confess I've only had her since Saturday (so this would be day 3 now) but she's already a part of the household and has already made it clear how she feels about me. She loves to cuddle up close to me, and in spite of her current habit of biting (she's three months old) she's been careful not to hurt me and seems more interested in "licking" me. I'll let her sit on my shoulder now as she's lost her fascination with biting my earlobe already (although she's got a strange fascination with sticking her beak inside my ear).
The cats have also adjusted to her existence much better than I had expected. She and Peaches occasionally have friendly conversations, and Sunshine consistently bites Cream's paws in warning when she feels Cream is violating her personal space (which typically means there's a cat toe peeking through the bars).

I have been taking plenty of pictures, yesterday and today. I'll have to post them at some point. :rainbow1:
I'm here on the forum for starters because while I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject, there's no substitute for a forum when it comes time to questions, and I want to make sure I provide Sunshine with the best home possible, because she really is my Sunshine already. <3

Welcome to the forum, SolarCat & Sunshine. :)

It sure sounds like a love story to me. Sunshine picked YOU, which is always a great sign. :D

We have SO many conure lovers and conure fans, I'm sure you'll get all the help you need, as well as all your questions answered. :)

awww, I love Pooky's story how cute!

Green cheek conures are AMAZING. They make wonderful companion birds and have such big characters. You'll have so much fun getting to know her more :)

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new little pineapple gcc. They are pretty little birds and lots of fun. I have a yellow sided gcc named Chiquita because her colors reminded me of a tropical fruit salad with yellow bananas on it:D

Welcome to the forum SolarCat and congrats on adopting little Sunshine! She most certainly picked you and stole your heart the minute you met her. Sounds like an absolute sweet heart!

I love your story about Pookey, Reminds me of my African grey. He tends to be a nervous nelly so when he is nervous or scared I always tell him, "You're Alright Quincy". Now when ever he is scared of something he says that. It let's me know something we are doing or something around him is making him nervous. They are such great communicators.

How fun with your new baby! :)

She absolutely did pick me. I'll confess I didn't know much about the Green Cheek Conure breed before I got her, but reading up on their general characteristics... Well, she and I have a lot in common, I'll tell you that. She's a good judge of people!

She's also only just over three months old, so she's still learning things like not to bite and how to step up. I'm working with her on that, though. She does love me, I can tell. Her wings are clipped but she'll still try to fly across her cage towards me if I'm standing on the opposite side. If I open up the top door, as well, she'll usually fly to me from her favorite perch (and she usually manages this one). Still working on getting her to step up onto my hand from that position, of course... She's more interested in eying up my nose in the off-chance I'm foolish enough to get too close! She also likes to hang upside down from the ledge and pretend that she can't get up so I'll pick her up. (She can get up, I've seen her do it, the little sneak.)

Pictures I promised! The third picture is of Peaches introducing herself to our new resident. They were meowing/chirping back and forth to each other. (Peaches finds Sunshine very confusing. Not a threat, not lunch, she just smells funny and makes weird noises and lives in a really big cat carrier.)

Sunshine certainly seems like a little character! Love the pics, especially of her looking at the cat upside down! LOL! Beautiful little girl!

Oh my gosh...Sunshine is GORGEOUS!!! You must be SO happy!!! Thank you for the pictures. :D

Love the pics, congrats on your new little friend! Isn't it great being owned by a bird? My little GCC such a joy! Some day I hope to bring another one into our lives.

Enjoy your new baby! I look forward to seeing more pics and hearing about her antics!

Congratulations! These little guys have such a huge personality for a tiny little body.

LOVE the photos! Her color is very vibrant :D

With parrots it's not breeds, but species.

She is a character alright!
