Hi Everybody
I am new to the forum and would like to introduce to you my 14 week old Blue Throated Conure, Inca.
Having brought her home at 12 weeks, we hit a major stumbling block last weekend in that just as we were getting her to step up onto hands and shoulders, she decided to be naughty, wouldn't go back in her cage which resulted in us having to grab to her and to our shock undoing all of our good work in the process.
It would seem that BTC's have a somewhat delicate temperament and unfortunately Inca decided to revert back to a wild bird. She wouldn't call, she wouldn't let us near her and backed away when we approached the cage resulting in us having to pretty much start from scratch to get her trust in us back.
However, I am pleased to say having been cage bound for a week and having worked with her everyday that yesterday we let her out again for the first time. Talk about excited, never seen a bird want to be everywhere at once and we just left her to explore, when it was time to go back in the cage we just had to be patient, we used one of her known perches and slowly and surely, (after several escape attempts) she went back in the cage, no grabbing required. I should mention at this stage that there was also a lot of bribery going on using her favorite treat which is Apple.
Today we let her out again and made even more progress, in that she will now step up on her perch when asked and will even transfer from the perch to shoulder, admittedly she doesn't stay for long but it's a step in the right direction.
More updates on training to follow and pics below.
