So.. I've had another lovebird in the past but only 1, like I do now. But, just needing to know, how many times a day do they need to fed? I've always fed mine once a day, is that alright?

Shannon, All sorts of school ofthought on feeding, but I will wager that all will say once a day is not enough. What are you feeding your lovebird? All parrots including lovies should be getting Veggies, fruit and small amount of seeds and nuts and access to parrot pellets of appropriate size. An all seed diet is not healthy for any parrot. My Salty gets access to pellets all day, some fruit for lunch, 2 peanuts, and dinner with us is some kind of veggie and either avicakes, or oat groats or some soaked pellets mixed in. Not that your love bird should have the same, but a mix of some type is healthy. We have sub-boards here, one is on nutrition and recipes and foods, Look thru that to get ideas,

Hi Shannon!
I have 4 lovebirds, and they get veggies with brown rice,quinoa, or some other grain in the morning, and veggies and fruit chop in the evening. They also have a dish with a seed/pellet mix available at all times.
I love the name Axel!

I have 4 lovebirds, the senior hen is about 11 and I've had her since before she got her little brow band. The rest are 4 - 8. They get small parrot mix which I change daily, and I put a vitamin powder in their water. This diet was a recommendation from our avian vet who is very well regarded. I appreciate that views differ on this, but he says that in the wild parrots eat dozens of different things and get different vitamins and nutrients from them. He says we cannot replicate that range by giving a few different foods, and ultimately the birds only eat what they want, and that is usually the treats (ours will eat sunflower seeds first, which are the worst for them).

I also give them a bit of the chop I make for the other birds, but that is more a treat.

Lovies are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies, they often die at about 7 from it. Until it happened to me with one of my favorite little guys (and nearly happened to the senior hen at the same time), I didnt take the vitamin powder thing very seriously but I am now a bit of a convert. I suppose though that if you have the ability to feed them 3 times a day with different things, you might be just as well off without the powder.

I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. 30-ish years ago, Harrison's was still a small company. My vet was actually able to talk to Dr. Harrison about my bird's species and status, and they decided on the High Potency. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry. He was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic.
