They are finally home with us! The trip to get them went great. when we arrived, we were met at the car by this gigantic dog. he was a Caucasian Ovtcharka, which I had never heard of. His head came up past my chest! Thankfully he was friendly, though:)
We were then taken to his barn where he has a bird room. I had thought these 2 were his last, but he has several he kept, unfortunately. He kept 2 pairs of CAGS, 4 pairs of brown headed parrots, a pair of red crowned amazons, and a single Goffin too. There are no toys in any of the cages, and they are fed mainly on a sunflower seed diet. He did have half of a whole carrot in each cage. The poor goffin was going crazy saying hello, over and over. He said he is keeping her because she's cool, but I think the only time she sees anyone is when he feeds in the morning. She broke my heart.

Then we came to our 2 'zons. They are in much worse shape than the pictures showed and were both shivering uncontrollably as it was soooo cold in there. His wife had told me that she had no idea how old they are, but he was more forthcoming. He said that the RLA is 13, he is almost positive. The DYH is between 50 and 60. Wow, that poor girl. So am I to assume she was wild caught?

They were very quiet on the way home, except the RLA kept making these little almost cooing noises when talking to the female.

I am thrilled to have them and hope I can turn their world around some.
Any advice would be appreciated! I am going to start regular misting tomorrow and they are both getting the nails clipped later this evening.

So without further ado, I would love for you to meet my new flock members!

This is Kimera, the RLA. My guess is he will quickly become know as Ki:)

And this is Calypso, the DYH (soon to be known as Cally:)

Poor babies, I can't wait to see their transformations now that you have them.

What sweeties! Obviously very lucky to have found another home, especially one that knows a whole lot better than their previous owner! What a sad, sad story with those other birds :(

Cannot wait to see how they recuperate and watch their personalities shine in the coming months!

Gosh some people shouldn't keep birds, the poor things!!!

Thank you for getting the gorgeous pair!!

Wow Calypso is one old girl! Hopefully her time when she was younger was a bit happier! :)

These 2 will feel like they are in heaven now with you caring for them.. Can't wait to see follow up pictures and their progress! :D

They just hit the mega-lotto in parrot-world. They can only improve :)

Thanks everyone, I sure hope I can do right by them. I was just in looking at them again and Kimera is sooo skinny. I am going to boil an egg, and also add some hemp hearts to their food. They both desperately need a bath, they are matted and their poor skin is flaking from being so dry. Do you think that tomorrow is too soon for a misting? Are there other foods I should be adding for them for now?

I would wait a few days to settle in, you don't want your introductions to be with a squirt of water lol:) don't be surprised if they hate being sprayed, because they had crappy owners. And crappy owners do things like squirt birds if they're being loud. So they might take it as a punishment . Wait until you get to know them a bit. Maybe offer a large bowl for them to take a dip. Those poor birds! Thank goodness you got them. Their lives are going to improve so much! :) maybe try a fine mist after the weekend, see how they respond.

Thanks Chris, good idea to wait a couple of days for that. I sure don't want them to connect me with anything bad that may have happened to them in the past! I put a crock of water in in case they want to take a bath, but they are still pretty freaked out. Maybe they will tomorrow. I hate it, but we do have to get Calypso out to do her nails. They are so long that a couple of them are curved back almost into her foot. She is having a hard time getting around the cage:(

Yup, the nail thing must be done. She'll appreciate it after. I'm wondering if her quick has grown long as well. Keep something to staunch any blood handy. You'll probably need some help...and a towel. I'm wondering, is the cage movable? If so, maybe put it in the bathroom, and run the shower until the room gets very steamy and let them sit in it (the room).

Oh poor babies.......I'm glad you have them now, these were the two you were telling me about before right???

Terry, these amazons are so fortunate that you have found them. You're right, the original pics didn't quite capture their true condition. It upsets me that these people were so callous and criminally negligent in their care of these birds, and it horrifies me that they have so many others!

But it warms my heart to know that they are now in your care. I look forward to seeing the changes in their condition over the next few months.

Chris, the cage is huge so there is no way to move it, unfortunately. I wonder if I should add a humidifier to their room?

Michael, yep, these are the two I was telling you about. I am so glad to get them home:)

Stephen, I agree, there should be a law against the way these poor guys were kept. I cannot imagine having birds who looked like this and not doing something about it. The feeling I got was that they lost their mates, therefore they are worthless:(

They are settling in a little better. Ki, the RLA, has moved around the cage to a new perch, so a little progress. They still haven't gone near the water or food yet. I am a little concerned about the water. Should I add more water dishes maybe?

Oh Terry, you have the biggest heart!....those poor poor birds, it just shocking to see Ki in that condition, the stress alone must be unbearable.

but now they have YOU!, your love for them will shine thru that big heart of yours and they will no doubt thrive in no time.
I can't wait to see how they improve.....

protein would be your best option right now, and vitamins....even liquid will be good for them at the moment.

I would also purchase some powdered calcium to boost up their calcium levels.
Before long they should start to improve.

Thank you, Beth:) I know, I feel so bad for them, and Ki looks so pitiful to me. I will run out to the pet shop in the morning to pick up some powdered calcium. What else would be a good source of protein?

so glad they got a new home where they will always be warm!! despite the plucking, theyre still quite beautiful and adorable!! Cally looks like a character, she's got "sass" written on her face, i swear. haha

Oh my, how very sad to see such beautiful birds neglected, thank goodness they now have you. I can't wait to see the pictures as they transform into the lovely birds they are meant to be...

Good news! Ki was just eating, and Cally ate a little bit. I gave them an almond and they were both lmost purring, i have never heard my other zons make a sounds like that. Cally was very scared to take it from me, but finally got her courage up. Ki just grabbed it from me..lol.

I am so glad that I have all of you along on this journey with us:)

poor babies , glad to see they finally have a decent home with lots of loving care Congrads , they will be looking great in no time
for the plucking you can use what I use on Smokey that's a sock buddy , it definitely helps

Where do you get a sock buddy from? I have never seen one in a store here:(

Oh man, I get so upset when I hear of people keeping birds in such poor conditions! :(

Bless you for saving these two precious lives. I don't even want to think what their lives have been up to now but I'm sure they will improve very soon under your care.

I'm still an inexperienced zon owner but I've learned a thing or two in the 7 or so months I've had Percym. He responds best to fun-time (playing, toys, music) and food! LOL. Be gentle and patient with them and they will reward you in SO many ways! Talk and sing to them. I don't know if it is the same for all birds but music truly makes my baby happy :). He looooves singing time (I sing, he screams along at the top of his voice). And he doesn't mind (or notice) if I am off key ;)

Try offering them some warm birdy mash. Even better if they will eat it with you feeding it from a spoon. I've had wonderful results with this. Percy and I have bonded so much since I've started feeding him his warm mushy dinner from his long red plastic spoon :). When he sees me coming with his little SS dinner bowl, he starts cooing and saying "Come! Come!". I don't feed him his entire dinner this way, just about half. Then I put the bowl in his cage and he finishes it making soft kirrrr noises all the time. Sometimes he calls me back to carry on feeding him. Then he sits on his sleeping perch and I have tto feed him through the bars LOL!

Good luck with your new babies. Please keep us updated on their progress.
