Hi, my name is brandi, I'm 21 and I live in savannah ga. I love all animals and have recently taken in a few birds. Most of my life I have owned cats and dogs. Had rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and turtles. I currently have 2-10 yr old Border collies, an 11 month old shepherd mix, 2 cats, a few fish, and a sulcata tortoise.

Now to the birds! A few months ago we (my mom, 9 yr old sister and myself) got a parakeet, her name is Jewel. She warmed up somewhat to us, when we got her a little friend. Our 2nd parakeet, Gem. I think the woman who got him out of the cage at the shop traumatized him. We have tried working with him, but nothing seems to work. He bites everyone as hard as he can. Any tips for Him would be appreciated.

Our newest edition is a gorgeous Lutino cockatiel. We are fairly certain it is a male. His name is Sunny. So far he is an amazing bird. We have only had him a few days and he has already adopted my little sister as his favorite human. Lol. He has been practicing is wolf whistle. And when he starts doing it he gets very excited and flies circles around the room and whistles. It's adorable!!!:)

Welcome to the forum Brandi. What a nice group of animals you have. Your birds sound adorable, you will have to post pics. We all love to see everyone's birdies!

I have 8 budgies, but to tell you the truth I don't try to handle them. I keep all 8 in a large flight type cage and I just love to hear their little sing songs. As a group, they make it sound as if I am in the forest listening to all the sweets birds. I can & do handle all my larger parrots. So, hopefully someone who handles their parakeets can give you pointers.

Hi and welcome to the forum. And like she said we all love pics of all the different critters, so feel free to share.:)

welcome to the forum im in GA too :) and as for budgies they are stinker i dont like them as pets because they are so flighty and dont bond as well as other birs but patience is key get his/her wings clipped and just sit outside the cage talking to him/her i would separate the budgies just until that one bonds to a person otherwise it probably wont and after a few days of sitting outside its cage talking to it let it come out of the cage on its own and just let it sit on you till its comfortable then start handling it more and more.

I'll have to figure out how to post pictures from my iPad. If anyone else knows how that would be great! Once I figure it out I will definitely post them.

Thanks for that info on the parakeets. Now that I think about it we never really held our parakeets when I was younger, just let them sit on something outside of the cage. I prefer the personality of Sunny. We are going back to the lady we purchased him from to buy a larger cage. I'm tempted to buy another cockatiel from her.

Welcome!

I tend to use a third party hosting site, such as photobucket or Flickr, and link pictures from there, pretty easy :)
Never had much luck straight from the iPad.

Okay, thank you, I'll try that now. :)

Here's some pics. I don't have any of my cats, border collies or parakeets on my iPad at the moment, but I'll try to get them within the next few days.

Well I can't get the link to download. But if you go on photobucket my username is omgdoubletacos.

Welcome to the forum :D

Our budgie was an aviary budgy (all of them were my little brothers), but all the other ones unfortunately escaped. We didnt want him to be lonely and brought him inside in a smaller cage - so I started just sitting by his cage with my hand inside with seed on it. If you sat still long enough without moving he would come and stand on your hand and eat from it, yes this initially took hours (I would do this with the TV on lol). When it was obviously making some progress my little brother started doing this as well - a good lesson on patience for him i think haha XD
Anyways. He is not afraid of hands anymore. and we even bird-proofed my brothers room so that he can be let out to fly around in there with the door closed. If you put your arms out while he is flying he now lands on your arms or even your head, and he fluffs up and closes his eyes if you give him head scratches now, where you would never have been able to get your hand near his head before.

I don't think he will ever learn any tricks or actually come when he is called. But i think he is quite tame enough to have a happy life in our house if we take precautions - and he was already older when all this happened. Since your little guy is younger and he will never see the lady from the shop again, with some patience and getting him used to your presence i think he could come a long way. :)

Thanks for the info, we'll probably start working with the parakeets once sunny is fully tamed. And he's very close in just a few days.
