Cockatiels- RIP Charlie 2012, Zac 2006.
So we finally picked up our little boy last night. Because the DNA results took so long to come the breeder has not been handling the birds a lot lately so he is still a little skittish and shy but I am sure with a lot of attention (and clicker training once he's settled in) he'll be fine. He's not very confident at climbing around the cage and tends to just stay in one spot. Also he hasn't eaten yet, so I'll be watching him closely. We will be off to the Vet next week for a check up also.
Anyway, here he is... our cute little boy Ollie!

You finally got him! He's a handsome fella!!! ;)

Aww, he's a beauty! Congrats!

OMG!!!!!! He is just adorable!!!!!! He looks so snuggly!!!!!

I am hoping he WILL be snuggly LOL Right now he's still unsure. I guess I would be too if someone took me away from my home and family. I know he'll learn that we are his flock now, but how long does it usually take? A few weeks? I guess each bird is different! My 2 tiels were pretty hands on from the beginning so I've never had to win a bird over before!
Anyway, I'm just trying to give him space (difficult when 3 kids want to hold him - but I've said he needs a few days to settle in first!) He's hiding in his Happy Hut right now (he climbed in there off my husbands hand) I'm not sure he can get out! The only place he has climbed is up the side of the cage but then it's like he's stuck and just stays there until I get him down and onto his perch! Will he start climbing more once he is comfortable? I am concerned that he isn't eating because he gets stuck on his perch or side of the cage and can't get to the food. I've put the bowls pretty much on the cage floor of the cage so he can walk to them. Unfortunately the breeder had clipped his wings which I think makes it even harder for him to get around the cage! :(
I am about to change his stainless steel bowls over for some plastic ones which are similar to those used by the breeder in the hope that he will recognise that is his food. Any other tips would be most welcome!!! (I'm just a new nervous mummy! :roll eyes: )

I think he is probably just a little unsure of his new surroundings....did the breeder say if he had a favorite treat? What if you held him & offered him some food out of the bowl by hand? Then he could see you taking the food from there.....

WHAT a pretty Ollie!!!!! Look at those great colors and those bright, smart eyes. :D Many congrats!!!!!

Aw... he's so *green*! What a dear little fellow he is! You'll have great fun making friends with him and helping him to trust you. One thing that has impressed itself on me is that when my Beaks were just new, they did far better with me on my own than with the whole family in the room. Even now, they get a bit unruly when we're all present: sort of over-excited. Just thought I'd say in case it helps, y'know? Anyway, congratulations on having Ollie join your family and I hope he settles in quickly and easily for you. :)

We went out for 3 hours and when we came home he'd eaten his pellet/seed mix (have to wean him off the seed) as well as some veggies and had bathed himself LOL!
It was like we came home to a new bird :) He was more than happy to be handled (though I did limit it!) So glad he is starting to feel more at home. YAY! :D

such a handsome boy!!...how old is he? he looks quite young, but I could be *wrong*

conures love to bath and it makes them feel more relaxed, he probably wanted some alone birdie time to bath, ha ha....

conures make great pets, so I'm sure you and your family will enjoy him very much!!

I do have one question....why does the dna results have to do with the breeder handling him...or lack there of?

...just curious ;)

Nothing much except I guess once they were weaned he wasn't handling them as much. So, because it was several weeks wait for the results after they had been weaned they were not getting handled as much for feeding etc...
Ollie is still obviously used to people because after his "alone time" ;) he is quite happy to be handled. He hasn't yet attempted to bite (a couple nibbles is all). Will have to work on "step up" though, once he has properly settled in. He is a sweet little boy and has surprised me at how quickly he is adjusting! I have relaxed a bit now that he has eaten :)
I can see I am going to have to put another bowl of water in his cage as he has had another bath again! I think he's going to live up to the conure clown image :D

I forgot to add - you are right about him being young, he is only about 10 weeks old!

Awwww, what a cutie!

Obviously I was worried about nothing... he gobbled down his veggies tonight at the table with the family/flock!

He is a completely different bird than he was this morning, obviously comfortable and feels a part of our family already! He is currently sitting on my shoulder making happy, contented little chirpy noises! He's a gorgeous little snuggle bug!

awwww, conures LOVE hair!!, they love pruning it, hiding, and playing in it.....he seems to have settled in very nicely....

please remember if you are in the kitchen and have the stove on, or filling up the sink.... say to soak some dishes, please put him back into his cage for his own safety....

he is adorable and you don't want anything to happen to him!

He is so CUTE!!!! Its great that he is already warming up to the family.

I love him Calace!!!! He is one of the cutest I have ever seen! I am so happy he is settling in welll!

Thanks guys! He is definitely already a big part of our family. :)

Crimson- I completely agree. I put him straight back into his cage last night when I started cooking dinner. Would never want anything to happen to him- better safe than sorry for sure!
