Hello!

I just wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do with my IRN baby (12 weeks old)? I brought her home about two weeks ago and she is still extremely skittish and timid, I have been unable to get anywhere near her cage without her flailing around. I have attempted to contact the breeder on what to do but they seem to have fallen off the face of the Earth. I had read that I should be able to just leave her cage door open so she can do whatever she wants. She will usually come out of her cage after an hour or so of the cage door being open. However, the problem is once she's out she will not stay on top of her cage nor any of her many playstands, she will instead fly around and run into things (walls, windows, lamps, etc.). So, this has caused me to be too nervous to let her out of her cage as I am worried about her own safety. I talk to her repeatedly and sit in the room with her, as well as I try to feed her treats but she won't take those either? I've also tried target training, she wants nothing to do with it. I am sort of at a loss of what to do?

Hi,

Following the description you gave, it seems to me that this bird was not hand raised. Do you know if she was?

It seems that she does not trust you yet, two weeks might be still a short time for a bird, particularly a medium size parrot like the Ring Neck.

Please be aware that she might not be at ease with the new environment and the new humans. If she had little contact with people before going to your home, she is most likely going to take a time to learn to trust you.

At the moment i would not let her get out of the cage. She need to feel confortable eating from your hands and accepting physical contact before introducing to a bigger environment as a room.

Try to found out her favorite food and then provide it in your hands only to encourage her to make contact. Little by little she will approach as parrots need social interaction and you will be the main source of it.

Cheers

She is hand raised, the breeder had also claimed that she was the most outgoing of her clutch? I do completely understand that as well, she seemed to have been around a lot of people at the time but I'm sure new faces is a shock.
Ok, I will try that. I have tried her favorite foods but she just won't take them from me or even if I leave them in a bowl. Thank you for the answer, it's greatly appreciated!

Hi Storm21

I observed you have many other parrots. Are they well socialized with you? It seems to me that you might have more experience with parrots that you let us know in your first message, no problem.

I asked this because there are other ways to approach your RN. Birds learn by the example, and if they observe a parakeet or your GCC interacting nicely with you, your RN might try to approach you. Of course talking gently and not trying to make physical contact before she shows she is ready would be also be well received.

One method for gradual socializing is:
bring a chair into the room where she is, and put it close enough so that she starts to get pset, and move it back a foot or so, until she calms down. Read something out loud to her in a soft soothing voice (a great suggestion is the I Love Amazon in the Amazon subforum, most is applicable to all birds). Read to her for sometime -1/2 to an hour. repeat daily, moving the chair 6 inches closer every day, until you are right next to the cage and she is OK with you being there. At that point start offering her fav treat thru the bars, and progress from there. This really does work well with IRNs who can be really skittish, but needed so they don't return to the wild state, all too common with IRNs.

Yes I do, they are very well socialized with me. Also, they all were rescues as well so this is my first baby? I was in a similar situation with them at the start, however they were not as bad as my RN.
Good to know, I have tried sitting in the room with her a few time while having my GCC on my shoulder. It had appeared she was more curious?

Ok I will also try that! Thank you for the help, I appreciate it!!
