Hi everyone! I'm still looking to find the perfect species of parrot for a companion pet. I was originally attracted to the pionus species because of the videos I seen online of them. Then when I learned about their tendency to be quieter than other similar sized parrots I was sold. I love how they look. Even though their colors aren't as vibrant as some other birds it doesn't bother me in the least. The fact that they are relatively cheaper than most birds their size is also a plus. There is a young blue headed pionus that has yet to get it's adult plumage at the parrot rescue I volunteer at and I'm about to ask to foster him. When he came in he was aggressive but according to the rescue has made a big turn around and is now even following people into other rooms. I hope I am allowed to foster him and see if him and I are a match.

I love my Pi! You're right, they're on the quiet side for a bird their size both in volume and frequency of noise. As you said less expensive for a medium sized bird too. Pi's are sweet birds. They're introverts. Not boring in the least, but they're more cautious and a little shy in general as compared to a conure or caique for example. Most aren't exactly what you'd call cuddly, though they might love neck scritches or holding them close. Kind of like the Eclectus you're holding? Not as high maintenance as Ekkies though. They're independent birds. They love hanging out with you, but won't throw a fit if you have to leave. He'll occupy himself with some good toys. Blue heads are beautiful, but then I think all the Pi's have gorgeous colors. Parrots don't have to be bright to have pretty colors :)
Let us know what you decide!

I have to agree. Pis are underrated when it comes to looks. There's a couple bronze wings at our local shop and they are just gorgeous.

I have a blue headed pi and he is the sweetest thing ever. He is very independent, but also cuddles whenever we hold him. He is now starting with this last moult to get more colours and the blue is bright and goes right down his chest now. I actually think he is one of my more beautiful birds:)

Unfortunately I don't think that I will be fostering the Blue headed. :/

The rescue owner wants to sell her since she is young and I can't afford to buy a bird at the moment.

Well, the right bird will come along at the right time:) good luck!
