Is baking play dough/polymer clay safe?

i want to make craft jewelry for my friends, and my attempts keep failing. i though clay/playdough would be a good idea, but i dont know if it can release fumes or something. so, is it safe for my birds?

Heating polymer can become a problem depending on temperature. Also remember that there is a coloring being used and likely a scent of one type or another. Take the heating process outside! Never a good idea to place such products in an oven used for cooking!!
