I always store seeds, nuts and pellets in a sealed container in the freezer. I do this thinking it would preserve the quality for much longer.

Is it okay to continue or does it actually diminish the nutritional value of these items?

It's totally fine to keep them in the freezer, and no, it does not diminish the quality or nutrition in the food...Heat does, just like when you cook veggies you lose a lot if not most of the vitamins and minerals from them (why fresh and frozen veggies and much more nutritious than canned veggies), but freezing foods does not act at all in the way that heat does.

I appreciate the help, EllenD! Thank you!

I freeze stuff, you bet!
Sometimes I even give the Rb pellets "fresh" from the freezer. He seem to enjoy the texture and /or temperature.

Freezing also kills bugs that common occur in seed and nut mixes. We target a minimum of 30 days of Freezing prior to use. Manufacturers will state two weeks. We also buy and breakdown the store packaging and Freeze in one week's usage packages. FYI: Remember to date your packages!

Enjoy!

Excellent advice on preserving the quality, dating the packages, and killing off pests !!

Since we have a vacuum sealer, we break the food down to manageable portions and vacuum seal them. The vacuum seal process doesn't cost that much for the bags. It seems to minimize any ice crystals developing inside the bags. We do this for her dehydrated food, chop (still not her favorite), nuts, pellets, etc.

The savings of buying larger quantities greatly offsets the small amount for the vacuum bags.

This also allows us to purchase larger quantities and save a few dollars to put towards something else for Arika.

Excellent information! Thank you all! Glad to know this is what many people do as well.
