I recently got a good size cage from a friend, but it has some peeling paint and rust spots as it sat outside for a while. Just wondering if I wire wheel the rust spots is there a safe paint I can use that will not harm the bird?

I have had success with Krylon spray paint.....just make sure you use their primer on bare metal and don't forget to use your safety glasses...a flying piece of wire quickly blinds an eye.....

Not sure actually, I usually steer clear of paint as its toxic for birds... Im sure someone else here knows what you can do about the rusty spots. Also dont forget to thoroughly disinfect the cage as there maybe a disease there that your bird will catch especially since its been sitting outside it may be contaminated with diseases from wild birds like Psittacine disease (PBFD) etc etc

I have heard you can use either Rust-oleum or Krylon~ just be sure it is dried a few days out in the sun

I think I'll go the rust-oleum way as its just the lower pan thats the main problem. I can probably clean up the rest and avoid painting.
