is this really a senegal?

Hey guys!


I'm new to the forums I just pick up a 12week old senegal and I'm trying to figure out if she's really a senegal because her head isent all grey like all the pics of baby senegals I've seen, her face is grey but the top front of her head has a dull yellow coloration and the rest of her head is a dull green. She does have the yellow/orange v on the front like all the pics I've seen on the net.

At first I thought it was because she was a baby and she dosent have her adult colors in but I've looked everywhere and I haven't found another like her.

Well i got it mainly for my wife she used to have a tiel back in okinawa and she always wanted to get a parrot, but a parrot of any kind over there is very expensive and could never afford one. So i thought a sene would be a good parrot to start with. I was also looking into the pionus family but none were available so i went with the sene.

Ive always been into exotic pets myself but more on the reptile side. Never really thought much into birds. but now that i have one im actually looking into getting a amazon or a grey for myself as soon as i get back from my next deployment.

cool just wanted to be sure because like i said i couldent find any other pics of a senegal that dident have an all grey head over the net. just making sure i dident end up with a hybrid of some sort.

Im feeding her a harrisons pellets mixed in with the seeds that she was eating before my care


I just got her on friday and im doing 3/4 seeds and 1/4 pellets. I will increase as time goes on till shes mostly off the seeds.

Im still trying to find what fruits and veggies she likes so far its a no go on apples and pears

My little girl goes nuts for raspberries, cherries, bananas, lettuce, steamed broccoli, pasta, egg whites... Heck the only thing she won't eat is raw broccoli and peas.

thats great war, try some lafebers nutri berries as treats, as for fruit nut goes wild for pomegranet, but dam does the juice stain lol

if your baking potatoes pop a little one in oven for them, skin on an offer it to them, nut seems to like them too, then theres corn on cob, grapes (best seedless, not sure if grape seeds are in the same catagory as apple seeds, but to be safe)

So far she likes sunflower seeds and she will eat them out of our hands buts all that we could find so far. Ill def have my wife try try all the suggestions.

Right now she is pretty timid and a lil bit nippy. Every now and then i can get her out of her cage on a wooden spoon, and from there she will climb on our shoulders.

Also hasent really touched her toys at all. gonna try another type this weekend if she still hasent messed with them. So far im useing the pinata one and this other hollow wooden tube one has cocunot shells on each end and stuff on the inside.

When i get home i take all the food out of her cage and wait about 3 houres. once that happends ive been trying the clicker training and sunflower seeds (i use a ball point pen that makes a heavy clicking sound) and i use the chop stick to point with wife's japanese so i have a surplus of chopsticks lol.


My wife has gone through half a dozen names momo, yoko, and a bunch of other ones i cant really pronounce.

try puttin a perch on the door, an train her to go onto door to come out, i dare not put my hands into nuts cage, she'll prob try to skin it for me lol, but she will step up off the door or roof of her cage for me (if she feels like it) :09:
or continue using wooden spoon as a hand perch, but again try to get your bird to come onto door etc, that way you are not invading its safe space

this nipping, you need to be firm, but at the same time avoid doing things that leads to her nipping you! because these nips will turn into bites an they hurt!
with these birds its a case of asking them if they would like to! rather then telling them to do something, even if its in there best interests lol
you need to learn its body language, turning even slightly is a polite no, if you keep ignoring this, they will bite, an it creates bad feelings all around!
my nut is fully flighted an will fly an attack me some days, if she is that way out, or even run at me, so when petting keep your face out of reach, and best for now to have her on your wrists/hands, you really dont want an angry bird on your shoulder

best thing to start with for bonding is head rubs wriggle your forefinger to it (your wife must use same signal) when you want to pet her, (not down its back, as that is sexual, and will create problems later on) watch her eyes if they pin, no turning of the head its a yes
you may find after a time she will bow to you, thats another indication she wants a head rub, be with you (not to be confused with lowering its body! with beak and wings parted, thats attack stance!)
while petting watch her body language agin lol these are sneaky birds an will sneak in a nip, if it thinks you are owed one or you are not doing it right or for to long!

as for toys go for kabobs/shredding toys, bells, nuts not into her toys other then things she can shred or destroy, and some foot toys i hide nutri berries in some of nuts toys

relax on training for now, as your bird does not sound to bonded to you, just start with the basics, but if your birds not in the mood for training, it won't do anything for you and you will both end up fraustrated (also your wife needs to be involved as well, or bird might only do what you ask it, later on)
training needs to be fun! try this, you come home an great bird in its cage, sit down an eat some fruit! your bird will literally ask to be out of its cage, if not offer it some, but she needs to come to you, when she is happy coming to you, start the step up training, and then the step down, it'll soon get the idea what commands mean, right now it has no idea what you want of it, or its place in your flock:52: and most importantly what its routine is

also your bird should be getting at least 10hours of sleep at night and a daily bath, (i spritz nut with warm water, every other day) not all birds like water, nut does not mind gettin spritz if she is on some1 lol

Yes! A very pretty Senegal too! I had several pairs way back in the 70's and the coloration really became vivid and more defined with time. Nice bird!

Mine hates being grabed in her cage. I think of the cage as her space, if she wants to see us we wait until she climbs out of the cage. Even so, we have to rest our feet on the cage and let her climb on and up, she's paranoid about hands near her cage.

For experimenting with her food, whatever fresh foods you make can likely be fed to her, just no fruit seeds or pits, rhubarb, avocado or asperigus. also avoid foods that have been cooked with excess grease. These birds don't need as much protein as others, so be careful your senegal doesn't eat too much.

Have you sexed it yet? If you don't want to pay for a dna test, there are ways to check, though the results aren't %100.

The head and beak on females tend to be narrower.
The chest 'V' tends to be longer on females, and extend down to the feet.
The feathers at the base of the tail, just after her legs on a female are almost always coloured with some green. If the feathers are all yellow, you probably got a male.
