Ok so I haven't gone to the breeder yet but we're going on Friday. I don't know if he'll be feeding a good food or not I have yet to ask, but I am being prepared for if I have to switch the bird to a healthier selection.

My issue is I'm looking at Harrison's and zupreem naturals but both bags I read say it's for adult birds. Does that mean it is not suitable for a young baby? I know with dogs if it says all life stages we feed to puppy-adult. All I can find is hand-weaning formula or adult pellets. Will these still be acceptable to feed a baby?

Assuming the bird is completely weaned off of forumula, the adult pellets will be fine. Myself I feed harrisons, my vet doesn't like the sugar content in zupreem.

Merlin was on harrissons from 10 weeks onwards if that's anything :)

My personal recommendation is to go with the Harrison's. When I first got Penny, she was eating the Zupreem Fruitblend, but I soon switched her over to Harrison's. I didn't like the fact that the Zupreem had all the artificial dyes and colors, not to mention the sugar content. Even the plain Zupreem pellets have a higher sugar content than other foods.

Ok first things first is to see what the breeder feeds. Thanks everyone!

I have birds eating both Harrison's and Zupreem fruitblend. The Zupreem was the only thing my BCC would try so both conures ended up eating that. Pete wasn't interested in the Zupreem, but I got him to try the Harrison's so that's what he gets. And Merlin was already on Harrison's. Rowdy used to eat the Harrison's but after all these years on Zupreem, she won't eat the Harrison's anymore. I figure being on pellets is better than not being on them, so I just work with their preferences.

Any bird that is weaned can eat pellets. If they are too large, crush some of them up. I feed my fids all of the different pellets. Zupreem does have high sugar, and coloring. But, still a good food. Try Nutriberries & Avi-cakes. They're pellets, seeds, and fruit/veg mixed together. Any picky eater that I have come across usually will eat them.

So I will be switching the baby to something else, the breeder feeds pretty bird. I think i'll pick up the pretty bird to start but go with something else once the baby settles in more.

It's usually recommended to keep your new bird on it's normal food for at least a month before trying to change it.

Yup I know. The breeder will give us pretty bird when we pick our new baby up than we'll get a small bag and wait for a bit before changing her over.

If you wein the bird to Harisons fine HP you should not change it. Pretty bird is not as healthy as Harrisons (my opinion).

If you can get the breeder to do it, that's a great idea. I asked the breeder of my BCC to wean her to pellets only (no seed). I was told, "She is eating both pellets and seed." No, she wasn't. She was mostly eating sunflower seeds and that was pretty much it. And I had a heck of a time with her getting her onto pellets. Honestly, getting Pete onto pellets was easier and he ate seed for 28 years!
