Parrots
Alexandrine, Cockatiel and pinapple conure
Hello all
Meet my tiel Perry and pinapple conure Jojo. I want some suggestions from same bird parents.
Jojo likes scratches but for 30 seconds only. I want to make him more cuddly. How to do that? Jojo takes treats from my hand and steps up very quickly. How to tame him more and more? He is with me since a month.
Perry the tiel is with me since 15 days. Pet shop owner told me she is a girl but there isn't any DNA certificate. She is new but still takes seeds from my hands and sometime steps up. But do not come to me on her own. She likes whistles. You can see in this video she is bobing her head on some tunes. I heard that female tiels never sing and whistle. I love to have her sing and whistle. Is it possible for female tiels? Can you tell me Perry is responding to my whistle?
Thanks in advance

You can't make a bird more "cuddly". Some birds like to be cuddled more than others but most birds have pretty strong boundaries around their personal space (psychobabble for "hands off"). The bird's most likely to enjoy cuddling were handled like that a lot as babies but many dont retain this as they mature into adults after puberty. Green Cheek Conures (including pineapples) tend to enjoy cuddling more than most but not the majority of them. If Jojo doesn't want to be cuddled now he's very unlikely to learn to like it.

I hope you aren't hung up on wanting a cuddly bird. They aren't like cats and dogs at all in this respect. If your bird let's you touch him at all you're doing well. Don't push it or he may learn to avoid your hands. Above all take your time earning trust. Time is months not days and any trust violation can set you back and undo progress. Let you birds come to you at their own pace.

How old is your cockatiel? You can't tell the sex in most of them until after they are a year old and get their adult plumage. It's true that males are much more vocal than females but they both make great companions.

As above. My CAG wants cuddles on her terms. It can be spontaneous. It can be situational such as waiting in the vet office. When she's had enough I have to respect her space protected by beak enforcement. I'm glad she's happiest with head scritches. I can deliver these as I am passing by. Learn your birds preferences. That will help you both with the cuddle issue.
