Josie - blue and gold macaw
Last week, we added a new puppy to the mix here. Josie was so interested when he first came in....she went to the bottom of her cage so she can be at his level and started "cat calling" him. It was the funniest thing we ever saw her do. The puppy, of course, was completely oblivious to her calling to him.

Now that he is settled in, his kennel is in the room with her. She talks to him all day...tells him what to do or not do. She spends more time at the bottom of the cage trying to talk to him and at times, it even sounds like she is trying to sooth him if we are not in the room. Has anyone else ever experienced this before? We never thought she would care.

Josie sure is cute, by taking the "mother role" LoL
Soon Josie will learn to bark !!!!

Actually, she used to bark when we first got her. Her previous owner had 3 dogs. She hasn't barked in a while, but I'm sure it will come right back to her when he becomes more vocal.

Josie's momma instincts are revving up.

Congrats on the puppy ! I think she sensed that another living thing in the too,. And since the puppy is just a puppy, she isn't really intimidated so she is using him as a playmate .

My m2 loves our chocolate lab he just loves playing with him on the ground, he actually pants back at the dog. So it isn't uncommon for the bird to like the dog IMO its really neat and how it should be. I always like to see all my animals get along it just makes for an easier and less stressful house:).

Well, Josie surely thinks the puppy is for her....yesterday she said (clear as day) "he's mine" and last night when we were covering her for the night, she told him good night instead of us like she normally does. : ( All in all, I have no complaints. I think it is very sweet that she likes the puppy.

How sweet of Josie with her little puppy! Our dog Sage is always right next to Oliver our parrot--almost like she's protecting him. It was not like this when Oliver first came home. We thought our dog needed to be medicated she was so devastated by the new arrival. How time changes everything!

That is really cute. When i had Percy and got Pablo as a puppy (1996), Percy just loved him. He even learned to say "doggy bad" and then laugh...LOL
With Gilbert being the baby of the household, my female dog thinks she is his mother and is always watching over him.
Funny how they recognize the 'baby', even if it's a different animal.

Sunny has cats. We have three housecats who pretty much ignore her unless she decides to make a grab for their tails when they get get too close. We also have a number of outside cats whose job is to keep down the rodents attracted by our horse feed. These cats are not gentle. Sunny has a large cage on the patio where she enjoys playing on nice days. Two years ago we noticed a half grown cat that would come and lay by her for hours. Sunny would sit at the bottom of her cage next to the cat chatting. They seemed to enjoy each others company and Sunny shared bits of her food with the cat. Fall came and Sunny went with us traveling in our business. She didn't get back to the patio until the weather warmed the next spring, but when she did so did her cat. We noticed the cat missing for several weeks and assumed it had moved on until it came back with kittens to introduce to Sunny. She loved them. Those kittens grew up playing around the base of her cage and eating the food she shared. Sunny loves to wash her food so much of what they received was soaked but appreciated. Who knows what this spring will bring but Sunny loves her cats and when she goes outside the first thing she does is yell "hi, hello, hi Sunny". I'm sure she is letting her buddies know she is there so they can come keep her company.

Hahnzel sees our GS and Standard poodle as competition and will climb down his cage to give either a nip if they park too long. Also he defends my space if they want my attention. However, my wife has taught him many things about the dogs, "what does the puppy say? Ruff!" "Where is the puppy?" "What is the puppy doing?" And of course how to bark.
