Hi guys,

I'm Wayne,

Me and my partner have been looking at getting a parrot for a while now have always wanted a Quaker or ringneck parrot, after visiting couple of pet shops and breeders we could not really find what we was looking for, so last shop we visited there was an 18 month old conure that belonged to the owners friend, he was very friendly in the shop and always wanted your attention, so after a long conversation about the bird we decided rio what the bird was name, was coming home with us,

We brought him home let him settle for a could of days in his cage, before we started to interact with him now the problem is when I approached the cage rio will come to my hand then try his hardest to bite me, has done couple of times and it hurts. My partner will do the same and he will just nibble her, is there something I have done or does he just not trust me yet,

I do speak to the bird more than my partner also, which is weird how he try bite me and not my partner

Thanks guys

Hi,

Don't worry about your bird it's such a big thing for him to move away from everything he knew and the people in his flock that he trusted and he's a small scared animal that in nature would be a prey animal.

He's now trying to claim his cage as his territory and will defend it with aggression if he sees fit. This is not judgment on anyone in your family just the birds natural instincts coming out.

You need to earn his trust for him to begin accepting you which will take time and patience but will happen if done correctly and seeing as he was friendly before there's a good chance I'm sure it'll work out well.

There is a ton of info on here so read as much as you can and just take your time.

Enjoy your bird and good luck.

Hi guys

I was talking to him and feeding him fruit from my hand still did not work, he wanted to bite me, so I decided to just sit next to his cage so he can see me and know I'm not a big harmful human, my dog came too me (boxer)
And i started to stroke him and said where's birdie next minute the bird came to the front of his cage screaming his head off, with his belly against the cage,(which he has not done before) so I went to try stroke his belly too my delight he was letting me and started rotate his head
Now when I enter the room he comes to me for a tickle,

He's such a cool bird

Green cheeks are amazing little guys and make their intentions very clear. You will learn what his trying to tell you by his body movements and noises in time and that will help you a lot in trying to bond. Reading though some of the threads will help a lot, like the one Allie gave you.

Green cheeks tend to be very beaky, so it can be a little intimidating initially especially if they have not had any pressure training.
