Kai's old mom

I have a Goffins Cockatoo that I've had for a few months. She used to belong to my sister's biology professor who became terribly allergic to Kai. Kai was raised from day 2 by this lady and lived with her for about 4 years. I'm in town next week and thought about bringing Kai to see her mom, but last time I did that, Kai "hated" me for a few days and we almost had to restart training. Last time, though, I had only had Kai for a week or two, so she wasn't terribly attached to me. Now that Kai considers me her new mom (even calls me "mommy"), do you think she'll have the same reaction if/when she sees her old mom? Do you think I should take her to see the lady at all?

How long have you had Kai? I'm sure she'll remember her old Mom but I don't think she'll react quite so strongly afterwards, seeing as how you guys have such a close bond now. Of course I could be completely wrong, every bird is different and I don't know Kai
If the woman really wants to see Kai I would do it. It would be nice for her to get to see her again.. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to be forced to give her up.

haha, I know she remembers her old mom. I was watching a video my family took in Belize (the lady was along, too. she's been a good family friend) and Kai started dancing and saying "mommy" over and over at the screen!
I hope it'll be better this time and I hope Kai doesn't think I'm "stealing" her away from her mom again.

I have been looking for this story, and looking for this story to post in here and I can't find it at all ... so I am going to summarize it and hope that one of the rest of you can pull it from some where ...

There was this story of a macaw that was re-homed the original owner was abusive and kept it in a cage that was too small, only fed it seeds ... yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah ...

The new owner had a bird room where the mac was left out to roam freely with lots of room, fresh veggies to eat, lots of toys and friends to play with and had been accepted into the flock and learned all of the dynamics of that flock (wait ... flock dynamics ... gonna search for that ... hold on , that's one I hadn't tried yet ... )

I loved that article! I'm hoping that when I finally get to build my new house that I can put in an aviary for my flock. That's so true about goffins taking over! I've only had Kai a few months and she appointed herself the head of all my other birds right away! For now my birds have to be happy in their huge cages and lots of time outside of the cage destroying my nice new couches in the living room, but someday they'll have a place all their own!
Question though, how do you clean that aviary room? I just have to mop my floors a couple times a day, but with them LIVING in a room, that's got to be a lot of work to clean!

hardwood flooring, lineolium flooring ... something NON-POROUS and you can clean the floor with a mop and bird-safe cleaner ... or you put in dirt flooring and sweep up the dirt and put more down as needed ... I am sure that if you did a google search you could find other great alternatives as well ...

I love the idea of the dirt floor, that's what I wanted, but Cory is too obsessive-compulsive about cleaning and he would probably have a heart attack with that much dirt on the floor
I was thinking of maybe doing marble or something because the birds chew on the hardwood floor, and marble is harder to break.

EXPENSIVE! Also, I think it would be too porous for that type of use ... after I posted I also thought for a second and Lineolium isn't a great option either ... the glue used to adhere it to the floor is UBER-toxic to birdies .. Your SO/DH might just have to suck it up and not go into the birdroom ...

Yeah, you're probably right about the marble. It was going to be expensive, but since this is my first house that I've been saving FOREVER for, I want it done RIGHT the first time, no matter the cost. I thought of a great "middle ground" so that my husband doesn't have a stroke. I can get the "cellsorb" product for the floor and put hardwood underneath. The cellsorb isn't too expensive when bought in bulk, looks nicer than dirt, and really will keep the floor clean.
