Kraken's age and other questions

So, still new to parrots... I was wondering at what age parrots are normally weaned. I've been seeing that question, although not about Sun Conures, and wondering. I bought Kraken at 8 weeks old and this is what he looked like. This was taken on the 29th of December, and his hatch date is supposed to have been October 25th.



A bird friend saw the picture, and thought he looked a lot older. He seems fine, but is this something I should be thinking about?

Other questions... Kraken avoids taking a bath any ideas?

He is just starting to taste things other than Zupreem fruit pellets. What are some good first things to try. He generally avoids trying anything new, but yesterday tried some Greek yougurt with green apple. He just tasted it, but he seemed to like it.

Kraken is a BEAUTIFUL sun conure, but most definitely older than 8 weeks.

How are you trying to bathe him? Have you tried gently misting him? Or perhaps he'd prefer to take a bath on his own in a large, sturdy dish. Don't give up on the bathing, he'll eventually (hopefully) will learn to love it.

Yeah, I know, that's what I thought when we bought her, but then they gave me a definite birthdate of October 25 when we went back for the genetic gender test papers.

I questioned her, and she was certain, and my husband confirmed that as the date they gave us originally. I don't know where I got four months from, but that is what I thought. I don't know that much about birds, but Kraken looked older than 8 weeks to me.

Thanks for the bathing advice and the link... I want to keep adding fruits and veggies to his diet.

Kraken is gorgeous!
For his bath, try running the vacuum, most of my birds love to be misted or take a bath in their dish as soon as the vacuum goes on

Vacuum as in vacuum cleaner? I've never heard of this, can you elaborate?

Is it the exciting noise? My dogs used to go crazy, grab toys and start flinging them about whenever the vacuum went on.

Running the vacuum, or running the faucet can facilitate the urge to bathe. Btw I love the name Kraken...it reminds me of "Clash of the Titans"...."RELEASE THE KRAKEN"!

So the Oct... Oh! I just got pooped on! ...the October hatch date is probably incorrect. I thought she said 4 months old the first time, but she also said October 25th and went on to say that Kraken would be 2 months old on Christmas. And when I called back to double check, she reiterated October 25. Is there any way to determine a more accurate date? This is her today...



And... I how have a gender... "He" is a "She". It's official.

I see baby greens on that one. So, this is still a baby... and no red oranges on the chest, and very few blues on the wings/tail.

How old I can't say. But, not very...

Not sure it's a pure sun either. Too soon to tell, but could be what they call a Sunday conure (Sun/Jenday.) Even though the hatch certificate says otherwise. Won't be able to tell for about two years until the full adult colors come in.

I've seen pet store Jendays being sold as suns and vice-versa.

We say, "Release the Kraken" when we let her out. Originally a parrotlet was my idea of a bird, and I had the name "Tempest" in mind; as in "Tempest in a Teapot." But when my husband kinda fell for this little conure, well... Kraken seemed to suit more. I was so sure this was a male, but I think Kraken will work for a girl too. Now she has a lot of terrorizing to live up to.

She did not come with any hatch certificate, or indeed, any paperwork, which kind of surprised me, and no band on her leg. I think I'm gonna just have to make up a hatch date.

She tried some Greek yougurt with raspberries, some carrot greens and a bit of fig today. Denied the mixed veggies with cocktail fruits in very light syrup. There's a lot of chucking food into the bin with this bird!

"Release the Kraken", too funny, very cute name and beautiful bird. You do throw away a lot while you wait for your parrot to develop a taste for fresh food. I'd offer more veggies than fruits. Sometimes they will try something new if it's shredded or diced in tiny pieces. A lot of birds will try fresh chop if it's mixed with a little cooked quinoa. Don't give up, Kraken will get the hang of it.

I found this food called "Worldly Cuisines" and Kraken seems to like it. She's having the "African Sunset" now, with Quinoa, Millet, Flax, and some fruits. I cook it briefly, and then freeze most of it in small portions, just taking out a half tablespoon or so at a time.

I warm it up a bit with some frozen veggies, and then mix that with a bit of Greek yoghurt and mashed organic baby vegetables (Stage 2).

Her poops have gone from red and white to green and white, and she weighs 3.35 oz.

She poops all the time: honestly, about every 5 minutes or so. Is this normal?

So, it has been a LLOOONNGGGG time since I have posted anything about Kraken: she is doing well. She is loud... incredibly loud at times, but sweet and quite beautiful. So, a photo:



This is her office cage. It is quite a bit bigger than her original cage, which she sleeps in now, but she still likes her original one better. Anyway, she is doing fine.

Will a second conure quiet her down or would that be double-trouble?

Well I have a sun and a green cheek conure - and they are noisy . I consider them double-trouble lol.

2X the bird, 2X the food costs, 2X the vet, 2X the noise level, 2X the clean-up time, 2X the bathing; on the other hand Kraken will get 1/2 the attention, 1/2 the scratches. Also, the 2 birds may hate each other and fight or the 2 birds may bond better with each other then with you.

My Tillie loves to take a bath in my hands. She was on my shoulder and I started to run the water to wash dishes. She came off my shoulder onto my hand so fast. Now I have get the temperature and speed of the water right before getting her. She's impatient. She drinks from my hand and the running water. Dips her body into my hands and then walks back and forth under the water. When she's done, she goes back up to my shoulder. I really should have someone take a picture of it. She's really sweet then.

That's exactly what Kraken does. As soon as I start the dishes, she gets all excited. I have to let her bathe first, or else! Kraken gets what Kraken wants...

Well, two times the noise is what I was afraid of. She goes through spurts where she is just crazy loud, and often it doesn't seem to be related to anything I can put my finger on. She might have been in her cage most of the day, or loose most of the day. On my shoulder or on her trees. the only thing that sets her off for sure, if she is in a squawky mood, is my husband's voice... she adores him and often shrieks as soon as he tries to speak.

I thought, maybe a feathered friend...

I have the same exact issue with my Jenday, sometimes he loves my husband and sometimes he squawks every time my husband opens his mouth to speak, can't figure that one out yet
