Hi everyone,

I had to purchase Nico a new travel carrier/cage. Pictures will be below. Soft sided ones Nico learned to unzip, or he destroys them. I bought a cheap cockatiel cage for travel Nico also learned to get out of that one, and the bars were easily bent. Now I’ve purchased this plexiglass, stainless steel one that’s in the pictures below. I can’t find anything out there for larger parrots.

Does anyone have any ideas for a larger travel carrier/cage? I’m out of ideas.

Thank you for the help. I’ve only had a large parrot for 3 years. I’m still learning, and I keep running into these problems.

Right now I keep a Teil as y largest but used to keep a Pionus in here until I had to rehome her. She seemed pretty well in it. The longest time I had her in it was 1 1/2 weeks.

Thank you, I’ve been a little worried as I know that a travel cage/carrier isn’t ideal to sleep in for long periods.

I have to take Nico with me everywhere. If I left him locked up for days on end at home in his cage, and with no interaction he’ll be featherless. Nico’s cage at home is large but it’s not exactly something I can travel with. I’m stuck between a rock & hard place. If he’s in a travel carrier at least I can get him out, and interact with him throughout the day.

Yes, I have people who would watch Nico. As in they’ll feed him, and change his water while I’m gone. They are timid, and won’t take him out which I can understand. However that doesn’t work for Nico, and he wants out of his cage all day everyday. I do let him out for hours on end. He doesn’t do well locked up for whatever reason.

It makes me feel a lot better that other birds have done okay in travel carriers. Thank you so much.

Feel free to ask any more questions, it was great helping you(y)

I have seen people with bigger birds use cat/dog carriers. Put a branch across the middle, hang some food dishes.

That’s a really neat idea. If this plexiglass one doesn’t work out I may do that. The kennel seems spacious.

May I suggest training Nico to wear a harness instead of being in a travel cage?
Travel cages are meant for just that, traveling, as the size for them is WAY WAY too small to keep a parrot in for a protracted length of time. I have one of the all metal ones suggested above and the longest I've has Salty in it is about 3 hours, driving to a friends place for a play date.

I agree, I just don’t know what else to do. Nico is intelligent enough to where he can break out of flimsy things. I essentially need a pop up large cage that doesn’t exist, or I need to try to build a stand that can break down to fit into cars.

I have this travel cage for my girl. I strap it on a pet stroller in order to taker her out. Would this type of cage work for Nico? I got it from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VR27ZGN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We are headed to a pet store to look for one of these cages now. The plexiglass one won’t be working out. Nico has stopped eating & I’ve had to hand feed him. It appears like he has some balancing issues right now too. That was just from a 5 hour car ride. I’ve taken him on 24 hour car rides without any issues. I’m assuming the plexiglass one is just way way too small for him.

Oh my gosh! That’s awful. I’m so sorry! I’m sure you are really worried. Do you think it’s car sickness? If you don’t find a carrier like the one I posted maybe you can use a dog crate? It will have more ventilation and be bigger than the plexiglass one.

We got one of these. I’m wondering if Nico isn’t doing well because he isn’t used to looking through plexiglass? No idea.
