My Java Rice Finch laid an egg 3 weeks ago in its feeder. The next thing I know I noticed the egg was on the cage floor cracked. Then I noticed another egg was in the corner of the cage cracked as well. A week ago I noticed another egg cracked, then today another one in the feeder.

What can I do? I can get the egg out of the harms way, but that's same as leaving it to its fate in the cage.

I don't want to deal with chicks and as you notice I have nothing in the cage to stimulate them to breed. Please advice!

P.S. their temperament have changed for the last two months to more violent or fighting with each other.

Very sorry that none of our Breeders have spotted your Thread. Sadly, it does happen from time to time.

Although I am a Amazon Snob, I have no hands-on experience with eggs or chicks. That said, I can provide you a bit of what I do know.

- Separate you two Birds as they are likely simulating each other.
- 'Some' diets tend to encourage mating behavior and/or egg laying.
- Once you have separated your two Birds, remove the eggs.
- If the female lays an additional egg, IMHO, you should set-up a visit to an Avian Professional, like a Certified Avian Vet (CAV), as repeated egg laying can be dangerous for your hen and there is an increasing likelihood of her becoming egg bound.

With hope, this reply (bump) will caught the attention of one of our well respected Breeders.

I'm a Fincho, I better give you the run down

There really is no stopping finches from laying or not, especially Javas, as they just lay as they please

If she lays too many eggs excessively, remove the other bird

Really with finches, there is nothing special you can do about them laying eggs as they please, and they will get broken, but thankfully that does mean you won't have any chicks which is want you want

Thanks

Thank you very much Sailboat and Fincho for the feedbacks.
Unfortunately, there's no Avian specialist or certified avian vet where I live.
For how long I need to keep them separated if I remove one of them?
What would happen if I bring in a parrot and keep them together in the cage? Would that stop them fighting with each other and laying eggs excessively?

It is commonly recommended Not to add an additional Bird and especially not in the same cage as that would likely only add to the issue of fighting and interject territory issues.

As stated, separation may not halt egg laying, but it will at least halt the fighting. As stated not my primary background, but a couple of weeks of separation will at the minimum reset their relationship.

I will separate them. Thank you for the advice, hope the separation restores their relationship.
