- Eclectus parrot, rescue, Riley 13 yr old, CAG siblings Punkin and Munkin, 5 yr old
Hi all, wanted to update the story of the older Ekkie, Riley, we adopted one month ago this coming Saturday.
He gets out several times a day now. Still trying to figure out what to do to keep him occupied while out.
Often he seems content just sitting on a hand or leg.
I've stopped letting him sit on my shoulder, not because of any incident, but because I keep reading warnings in other threads about the dangers of a serious bite.
I know he wants to be on my shoulder very badly, as he attempts to get there every time he's out.
I have always let all our other birds ride my shoulder and only ever had one incident, which in retrospect was probably him trying to protect me from a percieved rival mate ( my wife, and he was right).
I am considering letting him back on my shoulder.
His eating habits seem to indicate that he was not given very much fruits and veggies. He really likes pellets. We have been offering him all sorts of fruits veggies, and a bean soup-like mix we cook for him.
He craves nut berries, but I've cut all seeds out of his diet. Not sure if this is the best move, but from all I've read he will have a healthier longer life without too much seed.
He loves a spray bottle shower, and really enjoys me blowing on him after the shower.
Handling him is much better now that I understand his moods and boundaries a lot better.
He hasn't bit me for two weeks now.
He seems to prefer me to my wife, which is a little dissapointing for her, as she really wanted him to be her bird.
I've tried leaving the room whenever she wants to handle him because if I'm there he invariably wants me to hold him.
Another long worded post I know. Just wanted to let folks know he is doing well!!
