Local Cage and Toy company

Helloooo!

I found a local company called Tweety Cage through a Dallas Parrots faceboook group I am a part. I reached out to the owner about his macaw cages. They measure 40x40x80. They look nice. I was checking to see if there were any particular questions I should ask him before committing. One cage is $400 including delivery and setup. His macaw perches start around $290. They look very nice. I know the perches are made from manzanita wood, I am not sure what the cages are made from.

I planned to visit this week. My B&G would be in here while I am work, so I am wanting something that I can fit plenty of toys and entertainment in.

I like tall doors, the door size shown is OK for width, but for me, to short. The reason for wanting a taller door is for you more than your parrot. It is just easier to clean, get stuff and a parrot in and out of. While you are that they facility, try getting to all areas inside of the cage using the door. If they have one with a taller door try that also. Even if it is 100 dollars more, you will consider it money well worth spending later on.

The overall size is good. Cages of this size commonly have larger food and water bowls. I would recommend that you get several extra bowls so that you have some being washed, others wait for use and the remainder in use.

See if you can work a deal to get several perches of varying sizes as part of the overall package. It would appear that they should have them.

Now those playstands I like... they look like they are wider and thicker than the ones you showed me earlier.

40x40x 80 would give him plenty of room...

I really like those playstands. The person building has to have an 'artistic eye' or else they come out kind of wonky looking lol. Those look good, and perch placements make sense as well.

I would ask for the analysis of the paint used. Most cage companies have that, even if they don't offer it up front. I asked when I purchased my Avian Adventures cages over a decade ago before the company was purchased by Midwest. I still have it somewhere.

Do they have a webpage? I live in the area and haven't ever heard of this company. Looks like a nice size cage.

Those appear to be the "standard" powder coated wrought iron cages many companies make. It is a reasonably durable cage type if properly cared for. I would suggest steam cleaning to power hosing. Kiwi's last cage only lasted a couple years before becoming rusted from power hosing down outside. His new cage (also powder coat) shows no signs of rust after cleaning only with steam.

The size looks quite roomy and like you could put a variety of toys and branches. The play stands are fantastic. Oh, and all your pictures of these scarlet macaws (which seem rather uncommon these days) recently has made me add them to my "hypothetical wish list" of parrots I'd love to own right up there with a military macaw

He primarily works with people within this group on Facebook. I dont think its his full time gig. I sent him a message for a website however. I also messaged a few people from the facebook group.

I dont understand why more people dont have Scarlets..yes they are nippy..but can be just as sweet as blue and golds.

Would you suggest steam cleaning on top of cleaning with dish soap or cleaner you use? Havent heard of steam cleaning cages to be honest

Steam cleaning just uses distilled water, the heat sterilizes and while it does get things damp, it doesn't saturate it with water. You can find a halfway decent steam cleaner for around $100, and not only is it great for the cage, toys, perches ect... it's also great around the rest of the house seeing as harsh chemicals and bird homes don't mix too well. I suggest every bird owner have one Oh, and you should NEVER use soaps on the cage, perches or toys. Even using them to wash the birds food dishes is 'iffy' and you have to rinse super well.

I remember seeing a lot of scarlet macaws for sale all over when I was a kid. Not that you see many big birds for sale outside specialty bird stores these days, but I never see them on the forum, or hear of anyone on the forum adopting them even. Kind of makes you wonder if they actually do make good pets, don't typically develop the behavioral issues and therefore don't frequently get given up You see a lot of the green wings now. Sadly, species do go in "trends" (which is ridiculous) and green wings are "in", scarlets are "out" for those who want a large red macaw.

I know a little about parrot cages being sold today as i'm thinking about starting my own cage manufacturing business. With very few exceptions, most cages being sold today are made overseas and can be unsafe for parrots. if these cages you are looking at are made in the USA and especially made local ,then info on their construction is usually reliable. It's rare to find a company selling foreign made cages to research their safety or practice much ,if any, quality control. BTW from the price of that cage it would appear to be made overseas. (where they don't give a hoot about their product being safe). If possible buy a SS cage made in the US and you'll never need another cage for the life of even a macaw.

We went with the Kings Double Macaw cage for our Greenwing. He emailed me multiple times and even offered to give me the Grey cage for FREE if I bought the double macaw cage (at a new "reduced" price). I never went out to meet with him or see his cages. I know nothing about the quality of his cages. Just thought I'd add some input on this seller. He seemed desperate to get me to commit to a purchase, which turned me off. He couldn't answer any of my specific questions about the quality or manufacturer of his cages, so I chose to go with a cage from a company with a reputation for making quality cages.

The gentlemen that runs the company, (his english is very broken). However, I am sure that is why he came off as pushy. I originally felt the same way. In person, he was more than a pleasure to be around and was very conversational and welcoming to my wife and I.
