Hello, my name is Melissa. I live in Florida. I am excited to find this forum. I am trying to learn as much as I can about my conures. I have had them about a year now. There has been a lot of wonderful experiences with them. There has been some learning experiences for me also. I want them to be as healthy and happy as I can make them. I came across a blue crown and sun conure that had been put together in one cage. Someone had previously owned the sun and brought it back because they couldn't handle the noise. I wasn't sure about leaving them in the same cage. But the blue (Athena) was very protective of the sun (Zeus). They love interacting with me. The sun still to this day is very timid though and barely will allow me to hold him. I am having a problem now though. I have read so much and still so unsure. I know most people are going to say separate. Athena has lately been fighting with the sun. Not a lot but enough for it to make me scared. I have no problem getting another cage but I am scared to separate them because of the way they are bonded. I don't want them especially the sun to pluck. They will clean each other for an hour or more. They sleep together. Athena actually will put her wing around Zeus. I have seen rescue birds before and it is sad the the things they will do when unhappy or what humans do when they do not take care of them properly. Any advice is welcome. And again I am very excited to be here.

Hey Melissa and welcome to the forum. How long have you had them together and how old are they? They may not be boy and girl , or one is mature and the other not, hard to say why the BHC is picking at the Sun. I've seen many conures caged together that get along good. I'd keep an "eye" on them. If you did need to separate them ,i'd keep their cages close. Do they get "out of cage" time with you? how do they act then?

It's possible that a larger cage would help, although you didn't mention the size of the cage they are living in. You could always look into getting a double cage with divider, and you could put the divider in when necessary, and remove it when not.

Or, have two cages, but have the cages placed next to each other, and allow them to interact while outside of the cages or through the cage bars.

Thank you for your replies. The cage is 32 x 23 x 63. When I got them they said the bhc was a little over 7 months and the sun was 6 months. They had been in the cage together for two months before I bought them. I have had them for a year and they have been in the same cage. Every morning I try to give them a full two hours or more out of the cage before going to work. I try to spend time with them every morning. After work they at least get 3 hours out of the cage. Athena usually only snaps at Zeus when outside of the cage during play time. And I have noticed too that she has done it when I have been talking to Zeus. I am going to go ahead and get another cage just in case. Maybe separate them during them day and still let them sleep together at night. I don't know if the sun had a bad experience with the first owner but it has been very long road just to get kisses. He is very timid. I try not to be pushy with him. Athena will be aggressive also when she thinks Zeus is danger. I always have to put Zeus on the cage from the shower first because if Zeus starts squawking
Then Athena goes to biting. Sorry I was a little long winded. It is hard to explain their love/hate relationship lately.

Welcome to the forum. Its great to have ya.
