Our beautiful eccy hen died yesterday. Took her to the vet in the morning after she'd been unwell the previous night. We were given electrolyte and antibiotics for her but she wasn't drinking by this time. She collapsed and we took her back, put on a drip but she died.

The vet (NOT avian- the nearest is 900km away) thought she was heat-stressed (it has been low- mid 30s Celcius here, not unusual for much of Australia in summer) but Bella did seem to feel it more than the others. In retrospect we might have brought her inside (she wasn't tame though, so would have been confined to a cage).

Still very upset and wife's crying again this morning. I told her we will never call a bird Bella again as this is second Bella we have lost (first was a 'tiel that panicked and flew off my shoulder).

So sorry for the loss of Bella. :( Hopefully brighter days ahead with good memories.

Oh no, I am so sorry you lost Bella:( Thoughts are with you tonight.

Mike I'm so sorry to hear about Bella's passing. If any bird could aptly be named Bella it would be a female Eccy, one of the most stunning birds on planet Earth. I'm very sorrry for you and my regards to your wife as well.

I am so sorry for your loss. RIP Bella.

As a follow up, the vet surgery called me this morning (they are open 9-12 Saturdays) wanting the antibiotic back as they has a sick male eccy come in. They gave me a refund even though I told them to not worry about it. I was more concerned about the sick guy, and they hadn't charged us a consultation fee, either. The practice manageress told me she was looking for another job, as the emotional drain was too much (she's not a vet- looks after the books, reception etc). The head vet is a single mother with 4 kids- and used to cover two other towns 4 hrs drive from here. Amazing dedication, I'm full of amazement at people's devotion to duty.

Sounds like your vet is a keeper for sure. Hopefully things turn out good for the other ekki, and you will have played a part in that:)

So sorry Mike to hear about your Bella. : (
