M2 crest care and shower question

I have a couple of questions regarding care of the M2's crest. I've heard that when they don't have a buddy to preen it for them, we're supposed to help them out with that. It feels a little oily under his crest, like dirty hair that needs to be washed, and I can feel the shafts of new feathers coming up. So my question is how do we help preen them? Scratch it? Massage the pins and new feathers?

Also, he's not a big fan of showers ( we have that rain shower head that's doesn't make the pressure too hard) , he just sits there looking miserable. With a squirt bottle (even on the mist setting), he runs to the other side of his cage and puts his foot up, as if saying "don't squirt me!"

My Mac isn't a fan of the shower, I have to fist him with a spray bottle. I spray above him and let it fall on him. For the new pin feathers, roll them between your fingers, helps break them open.
