I was working this morning in my work room on the other side of the house. No one else was home but me and my birds. I had the door closed to my work room because I had been working with CA glue on a couple of models. I heard this tapping on the outside of my work room door. I thought it was my wife getting back from her appoitment, but I also thought it odd because she never knocked and never lock the door.

I opened the door and there stood Macaroni with his head cocked to the side looking up at me saying "want some freesh water". I picked him up and carried him back to his cage which is left open all day and checked his water and sure enough, he had dunked some of his morning food in his water bowl. I wouldn't have believed it had it not happed to me. I figured maybe he was a bit lonely for company so I sat with him on my shoulder and watched Sesame Street with him. He seemed pleased with that. He doesn't cease to amaze me. This is one smart bird.

THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER!

1. Your bird knocks on the door!
2. Your bird understands what he's saying!
3. Your bird's name is Macaroni!!!

Wow, you are one lucky bird owner. I hope that I can someday teach my bird to knock on doors and ask for water. Seriously, that's amazing!

I agree with Leia and I double agree with the third point, Macaroni is an excellent name!

What a smart boy. Be sure to let us know what other chores he find for you to do. lol

Thats a great story! They are smart birds alright .... mine does the doorknock too but never to request my services lol

Thanks for sharing! That truly made me smile, and today I needed it! Thanks again!:)

Wow! Mac is incredibly smart! And demanding too! lol

That's brilliant - at least you know he'll never sit there silently if somethings wrong, he'll come straight to you and let you know ;)

Didnt know whether to laugh or cry. That is just too cute. What a smart Mac, knows what he wants and how to say it. He has you well trained as his personal butler/valet. But Sesame Street? I suppose thats his fave show?

It's not that surprising for Mac to ask for fresh water because that is what he does first thing every morning when I open his cage. He will say "want some fresh water". He picked that up from me because I will change out his water bowl at least 4-5 times a day and always ask him if he wants some fresh water hahahahaha.

Also, the previous owners called him Macarthur as in General Macarthur. He was a big history buff. My nick Name for Mac is Macaroni and also Pookie hahahahah.

I think he picked up the door knocking thing because we have his cage next to an exterior door and when some one comes over, they will some times knock on the door rather than using the door bell and we will go and answer the door. He has started mimicing the door knock and will use it ever now and then. It sounds so real that I will actually go and check to see who is at the door until I realize it is him doing it. I figure one of these days, he will start to laugh afterwards like it's a big joke.

M You are so lucky to have Mac in your life now and you are doing an amazing job with him. I am sure he is very happy. How does Tiki react to him? He is so smart. Love your story.

Tiki gets along better with Mac than Mac does with Tiki. It seems Mac is a bit jealous of Tiki and if we are playing on the floor together, Mac with try and peck at Tiki's back with his beak. So I have to seperate them. Tiki will walk right up to Mac and want to check out his beak. I guess because of the difference in color.

Yes we had a bloody bite on Crickets nose the other day as he was on the outside of Rosie's cage. Do you think he would remember that!! Of course not. He is such a jealous little guy and seems to want to control everything and everyone which is just like a conure. He actually whimpered when she got him.

What a neat story! Now if you could train him to clean and fill his own dish ;)

So you have am African Grey and a conure? I was thinking that I wanted to add another Eclectus to our family, but I have always wanted a conure. I was afraid to get a smaller bird because I wasn't sure how they would react to each other. I would never put them in the same cage or leave them unsupervised, and was just wondering if it would be possible to have a smaller bird with my Eclectus.
Also, awesme job with Mac. I wish Ezmerelda would tell me what she wants, all she will say is her name and a couple random words, but we are still working with her. Maybe one day.

fascinating, they do seem to have that knack. Do you use the expression 'want clean water' with him ever?

Yes, when I first got Mac, I would ask him probably 4-5 times a day when ever I would change out his water if he "wanted some clean water". Now, when I open up his cage first thing in the morning, he will say "want some fresh water".

Just like when my wife and I get ready to leave the house for something like shopping, Mac will say as we are leaving "be right back Mac" and will repeat this two or three time before we get out the door. He picked that little nugget up from his previous owners.

If I'm on the computer, which is in the same room as Mac's cage, he will climb down his cage and walk over to where I'm sitting. If I ignore him and not say anything to him, he will say in a loud voice "HELLO" until I acknowledge him and pick him up.
